Looking to add an elk rifle to my line up. Hunt Colorado in mostly timber. Longest shot would be 300 yds max. I'd like to keep total gun weight with scope sub 8 pounds. I do a lot of hiking. I had a Kimber 30-06 classic that wouldn't shoot at all not matter what I tried so I got rid of it. Here are the calibers I'm considering - another 30-06, 7mm WSM, 338 Federal, 300 WSM, or 35 Whelen. I am not a big reloader, so factory ammo availablity is a consideration.

That narrows it down: 30-06 or 300WSM (although 308 and 270 would work well too)

Perhaps the '06 has a slight edge due to no reloading. Though I would go with a current production Win M70 as the rig.

Current production 30/06 would be just right. Although a 35 Whelen would be cool as well.

The 30-06 was made for you. I would look for a used Winchester New Haven gun and hunt the rest of my life.

If I didn't reload, I would rather have a 270 Win. over a 30-06.
Just me.
