I'm getting a 1-9 twist 223 for just practice shooting and if I can get some better access, coyote hunting. When looking at the different types and styles of bullets I notice match/hollow point, FMJ, among various styles of expansion bullets. Could someone give me a primer in these different bullets to help me decide where to start. Since I plan on doing mostly target shooting I'm leaning toward the match and FMJ bullets. I'm guessing that either would work fine for coyotes, and am thinking bullets in the 65-70 grain weights. Thanks.

I'm liking the 70 gr. VLD's and 1-9 seems to spin them just fine.
They kill things, too.
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Either style would work fine for target shooting, but in Mich. or most other states even the open west, I would select a varmit style bullet for coyotes or other predators..something that would explode on impact...we don't want hunting accidents, and I am sure you don't want to pay for a farmer or ranchers cow...if you have good access it could end quickly with fmj bullets bouncing over the country side..some match bullets are pretty tough also..for coyotes, I would look over the 55-to 65 grain bullets...Horn. Serria, Speer offer some fine ones..in bulk packs that can be pretty cheap......

I like v-maxes in 55 gr.
Would love to try the Berger VLD too. Used them in .270 WSM for my first deer in Ca. worked great.

Sportdog,
For a couple years I used the Savage 9-twist. I tried various target or benchrest bullets. None opened on squeeks except the Hornady 75 grain A-Max. My longest rock chuck kill was with one at 527 yards. Entered the rump and exited under the chin. Inside looked like a big game bullet damage from a hunting bullet.
The Hornady 75 A-Max is the only target bullet I would use close to that weight.

i use old bouncy balls to fasion my own bullets and yes they bounce all over the place but, fmj in 62g ss109 or 55g ball would work great and easy on hides if you want to save them.

For performance to reach out there... you have the 75 and often overlooked 80 grain AMaxes..
maybe someone can chime in here for coyotes use... but the 68, 69, 75, 77 and 80 grain Match bullets, all seem to me would zip right thru a coyote ( not damaging the hide) and certainly tear up enough of the vitals to drop him...
that is certainly what I'd try...
I can tell you the Hornady 75 grain HP is MORE accurate than the 75 AMAX...
