Has anybody else noticed the rise in food prices over the last few months?

It seems like every month there's another 10% to 20% increase in the things I buy and like. Steaks, cheese and eggs are just a few examples of things that have gone up substantially. The reason why is obvious. Increased transportation costs due to the rising cost of fuel. The outlook of $5.00 a gallon gas is rather daunting.

That will put a serious crimp on the economy and my food budget. mad

Saturday evening I was home with the chillins and was snacking on a bag of Ruffles potato chips. I happened to notice the price on the bag; $4.29! For a 9 ounce bag of potato chips! mad

Yep, I've noticed.

Edit to add:

I asked my wife the next day if she was aware of what she paid for that bag of chips. She hadn't a clue. "I didn't look at the price. They're usually on sale anyway." Smart woman, but a clueless shopper sometimes.

It's ridiculous. The other day i spent $128 at the grocery store and walked out with three medium size bags.

There's a reason food and fuel were recently removed from the inflation index...

might have something to do with all those trucks...
the big ones that move food from one place to another...
and the tractors and combines...
and the fact that most fertalizer and insecticide is a petro-chemical by-product.

hey!
'

figures don't lie

but liars do figure

it's amazing to me the stuff folks accept as fact from the gov't

ole blowhard Spano is a prime example "by gum if the gov't says inflation is low, it's low, those are the accepted numbers by those that make the decisions"

god but he's a goofy old guy

yep let's remove food and fuel from the calcs, after all who uses those?

but chinese dvd players have come down in price thus helping to keep inflation loooooowwww

John Williams shadowstats.com still keeps track of inflation the "old" way, the numbers are pretty enlightening

course you don't want to look at them if you're more comfortable saying Baaaaaaah, rather than Bah humbug.

I live in Oregon and just spent some time in North Carolina. I was shocked at the price of groceries there compared to the west coast.

moose and salmon in the freezer, still potatoes stored in cellar from the garden.

buying fresh produce has certainly gone up, but it's still one of the cheapest things you can buy at the grocery, and my how shipping has changed things, you can get pretty decent produce all through the year up here. Wasn't always that way in winter.

but I believe your analysis doesn't apply to most folks Calvin, it could and probably should, but I think most of America is pretty well at the mercy of what's in the grocers and what price they charge for the stuff.

Seems an awful lot of stuff has just about doubled in price over the past few years. I have cans of smokeless powder I bought at a local shop 6 years ago with price tags of 17.99 on them. Today they're 29.99 at the same shop. The last black powder I bought {5 years ago} was 12.50 a can. Bought some this past season and it was 20.00. Loaded rimfire/centerfire ammunition has also nearly doubled in cost over the last 5 years. Gas was 1.99 a gallon 3 years ago and it's 3.89 here now. A loaf of white bread was .79 down at the local grocery 3 years ago. It's 1.49 today. I don't know where they dream up the official inflation rate numbers but they're lieing out their asses. I do know my pay rate isn't going up anywhere near fast enough to keep up.

I estimate that food prices are up around 50% over the last three years, across the board...based on what the same cart of groceries cost now vs. then.

My wife has kept all receipts from grocery stores for the last 2-3 years. Groceries have gone up 25% from last year on what we buy. My raise went up about 2-1/2% to match "inflation". Yes, they took food and fuel out of the inflation index and added home prices. Since home prices have deflated, and no one buys a home every week, it is a farce. True inflation has been running for the last 3 years at 10-12%.

Grow your own. Small or large scale, it puts a serious dent in the grocery bill. Plus, you know exactly where it comes from and what its been treated with, if anything. For the $150 worth of seeds I purchased (all heirloom non hybrid or GMO)I should get a return of over $1000 worth of food to have on demand (once it starts producing) plus enough to preserve in some form to last us till next spring. I can also save seed to plant next year, thus mostly eliminating the cost of purchasing seeds again next year.

It is Obama's fault. In 2010 and 2011, Obama and the Fed printed up an extra $600 Billion.
This money just came out of thin air. Now we will all pay the price. Food and gasoline are only the start. mad

It isn't just lately. Since 2009 or so,our grocery bill has gone up about $5/week. Lot of things we use to buy, we don't now.

I remember when carrying a hundred dollars of groceries involved multiple trips from the house to the car and they fed our six kids for a week or more. Now I can carry a hundred dollars of groceries in one hand. Thank God for the farm! We grow much of what we eat.
