There have been estimates. Many engraved rifles which are obviously original have been found that do not letter as engraved. As a result we will never know the exact number. BillR

BillR This has fascinated me for quite some time - why did Savage (and Marlin and Winchester) often not mention engraving in the factory ledgers? I have seen factory engraved Marlins with other special order features. The other features are noted in the ledger, the engraving is not. Yet, there are other times the engraving is noted. I would say more often than not, the engraving is noted. So as far as a, "reason" - whatever it was, it wasn't done consistently

texken, there's a lot of published articles out there over the years which throw out a number of "1000 engraved Savage 1899's". Nobody has any idea where they came up with those numbers, but they get repeated a lot. That would be excluding the 99K's, postmil PE/DE/CE/RMEF, etc.
Some of us here think the number is quite a bit higher than 1000.

thats what I have thought about that no 1000, I have 1 engraved with letter...no mention of engraving, but in J.T.'s research it had been sent to the custom shop...have one that is noted in the letter that it was engraved. Ken

I have been seeing the 1000 number a LOT lately and one listing even claimed there were only 100 of those that were takedowns... I believe both of these to be UTTER crap. I bet if we tried we could get 100 engraved t/d rifles claimed right here alone.

Another one that I believe is a load of crap is that Enoch Tue did the majority of the engraving with a little help from his son. I have searched records and there is never any mention of a son or of any children. He was single, then married for about 26 years, then he has a widow. Ships logs to and from England only show him by himself or with his wife, no children along with the census records, him and his wife, no children. Still lots of myths out there! As this article states if there were only 300 Tue engraved rifles I must have seen them all and we know that is not the case.

One person writes it and publishes it, another copies it and it is now gospel. This was the first publication:

I have no clue how long it takes to do an engraving on a rifle, so for argument sakes it takes 7 days. (1 week)
So say Tue was there from 1900-1925. 25 years X 365 days, divided by 7 days equals 1300 engravings.
That is quite a bit of work I'm thinking to be done alone. (Assuming my math is correct)
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

So if it was 1916 that he stopped, then 1000+ rifles would be mighty impossible...!!! ???

it certainly does not take a week to do an A grade engraving... my guess is more like 1-2 days. We have had this conversation before on here and some with experience stated (as I recall) that they though the A grade pattern could be done in a day.
