I can hit the man size targets with an M16A2 all day long at 300meters. This is very very different from hunting. All it takes to score a 'hit' is ANY hit on that man size cut out. Be it at the very bottom left corner or the top right.

For hunting say whitetail I'll put a 10" kill zone as 'my' target. Hitting a 10" target is much harder than poping that man silouete.

For me 200 a long shot with Peeps, not doable with traditional buckhorn 'iron' sights.

200 yds -150 yds and the light has to be dang good to do that. That's why I used scoped rifles most of the time. magnum Man

Some hunters can't hit the kill zone at 200yds with a scope.

Just saying.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

I've been using open/peep sights the last 4 or 5 years and I find that the longest pratical range to be around 200 yds. Most of my shots have been under 100 yds. With my Marlin 1895 Cowboy I have taken about 8 or 9 elk and all were well under 100 yds. probly closer to 50 yds. Using my M54 Win. in .30-06 I have total confidence out to 200 yds. Shot my antelope at a lazered 330 yds. with it, I did have a very good rest and the light was good and the goats didn't know I was there. Under any other circumstance I probly would not have taken the shot. In short I don't feel handicapped at all using open sights.

If we are disregarding peep sights and refering only to the cheezy buckhorn sights like come on a 30-30, my limit would be about 50'. On a good day.

I've killed abuck at around 200 yards with an open sight 30-30 and taken a turkey at 175 with same. I'd say 200 is about my limit though.
