Im planning to build a light weight hunting rifle that will mainly be used for deer and antelope but might get some elk use as well. I dont want to much recoil because my girlfriend will also be using it to hunt with so I dont want her to be scared of it. Which one would you choose and what bullet would you run?

Based on your main uses and the fact that you're gal will be shooting it, it seems that the 6.5-06 would be your huckleberry... though there isn't a fly to be found on the 280A.I. The 280A.I. for me, has pretty tame recoil, but I'm sure for a lady it might be a little different story. Either way, you couldn't go wrong IMO.

Another thing to think about would be stock fit. Depending on her size, a proper fitting stock would probably reduce felt recoil more than anything.

If she can comfortably shoot the same stock as you, I would go with the 6.5MM. But I'm biased that direction.

I have a 280AI being twisted up by the gun butcher as I type this. Either is fine for even a reasonably statured lady assuming good stock fit for her and gun weight is kept reasonable

280 AI hands down.
Way more bullet choices and if your girlfriend is recoil shy let her do the fireform loads.
You can make the recoil as light as you want it and still have alot of horsepower on hand when needed....................

No argument............The 7MM is better all things considered.
More choices, more power, more everything. Then again you could load it down a little and have a .264...............grin

I'd have to agree with the 7mm.My wife is not a big girl but she's shot a couple of bucks with her FauxTi .280Rem.Can't see her having any problems with either of the calibres you mentioned as long as the fit was right. The same should apply to your GF. Cheers,Monashee

Good advice. My wife does almost all our fire forming and it's helped her a ton. She shoots my 280 AI and the 270wsm Montana I had with no problems. She doesn't shoot them alot at a time though. My call not hers. I try to keep her in the 223 to 250AI range for most of her trigger time.

Why not take the lady in question out for a day at the range and have her shoot a few rounds from various guns of differing recoil? That should give both you and her a solid baseline for making this decision.

Owning and shooting both cartridges, the 6.5 WILL have less recoil and just as great bullet and powder selections as the 7mm.
All Sectional Densities being equal.

The lighter the rifle the more recoil you will have.

With the 6.5 you will be able to match the same 7mm BC's with far lighter bullets which result in less recoil and same, if not sometimes better down range ballistics.

The 7mm needs a higher weight bullet to match the lighter 6.5 and with deer and lope on your agenda that makes the 6.5 a natural for what you want.

NOT really.

You forgot to mention it would have more recoil too.

Why not build a 6.5-280AI?

yup...

o/c you could put a break on any rifle.

the "7's" shine at 162 gr bullets +

Launch speed and BC are things I look at first with the bullets avail.

Many choose "A" bullet first but that limits ones approach imho.

Easy to form cases for a 6.5-280 Gibbs/JRS/PDK too!

Don't do the 6.5-06. You will limit yourself to one rifle.

.5mm up or down is to small an increment to bother with. 1mm on the other hand makes a huge difference.

You should instead get the 280AI and then also get a 6-06AI.

Your welcome.

Yeah one that is capable of taking any game in NA... what are the odds and what a shame to have such a versatile rifle?

So how many have you owned?

Opinion -

6.5X55 does it all!
Build the 6.5-06 and you will never be disappointed.
