The velocity data in Nosler reloading guide 6 has the 280AI right on the heels of the 7RM with 160 gr bullets. However, the 280AI data is using a 26 inch tube and the 7RM is with a 24 inch.

What kind of real world velocities are you getting with 160 gr bullets in the 280AI and the 7RM?

Please include your barrel length.

There is no meaningful difference between the two nor any reason to use that heavy a bullet with today's super bullets. A 140 gr monometal will kill anything that walks NA.

A survey of loading manuals will answer your initial question.

The Hodgdon data (24") show a max of a tad over 3000 for the AI and 3100 for the & mag with a 140.

Barnes shows 3145 with a 140 24" 7 remmeg (no data on line for AI)

Back when I was really into Schultz and Larsens, I found there was no problem getting 3250 with a 140 TSX in the 7x61 S&L with a 26" barrel.

Currently build a 338 RUM with a 34" barrel.... it will blow away any other 338 as would a 7mm magnum with an extra long barrel.

One thing for you to consider, in what sounds like a medium game open country rifle, would be a single shot. A 28" No 1 is no longer (OAL) than a 24" 77.

Good shooting!

Real world 280ai numbers I'm seeing out of my 26" Pacnor are 3050 with the 162 amax and 64 gr. of Magpro.
I'm seeing 3000 with the 168 VLD.

Haven't tried lighter bullets yet.

While there is no solid ballistic reason to prefer the AI over the 7mag, it is a very handsome cartridge.

You can be even more esoteric with the 284 Hawk, 140 @ 3120, 24".

Resale ? Stick with the remmag.

I have the 280 AI, but with that said i wouldn't go out and sell a 7mag to get one , just not enough difference to worry about.

I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that the difference between the Wizzum and Remmy speeds is an artifact of the different barrels or powders used since case capacity is virtually identical for the two cartridges. If anything the Remmy is a holds a tad more powder.

I remember some of the great groups you were getting early on.

How is this load shooting?

Thanks

If they were all fired from the same barrel at the same pressure I think there mightbe 100 fps difference. Could go either way + or minus 50 fps.
