Hello, do any of you have any experience with Kodiak Charters? Any experience with their reindeer (caribou) hunts too?
Thanks.

Thanks. The domestic reindeer hunt can be fun, but you'll need to pay a fee to access those animals because you'll rarely if ever find them on the refuge. Also, if you decide to chase reindeer, better have a pretty stout camp for that side of the island and be prepared for the idea of being overdue a few days when trying to get back to town.

Sitka:
I've only once seen them off private land. However, it is known that on occasion they cross onto the refuge. But, they're not exclusively on refuge lands.

Are you kidding?

Tried to put the map on and could not get it to go. Just where exactly do those caribou hang out if not on the refuge? Do they run to Karluk for a beer? I have seen them on the beach well up inside Uyak and up off the beach well South of Seven Mile... I have never seen them off the Refuge and have never heard of anyone that has, aside from you apparantly. ADF&G describes their range as right in the middle of the lower end...

Deer Monger:
Like I said, only one time since 1977 have I ever seen them off private lands in the region they inhabit on Kodiak Island proper.

I suspect you run a very narrow slice of Kodiak then...

mntman, I suggest you contact Kodiak Charters yourself and see if they charge an access (tresspass) fee to hunt caribou, that would indicate that they are hunted on private land.
Everything that I have read states that they spend their time in the Ayakulik Valley which is inside the KNWR and does not require an access fee. You can also google up "kodiak caribou" and get a lot of info that way too.
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Kodiak Charters wouldn't be the ones who would charge an access fee, because they're not the corporate entity which owns the land and besides, they're on the other side of the island and a long way from where reindeer are located. Your best bet would be to call 907-486-1880 and talk to John and, to call 907-258-0604 and ask what the current user fees are. You can also call 907-485-2566 and ask Mike if they have a private-land commercial-use permit which would allow them to put customers on that land.

Kodiak Charters will inform them if they need to pay a fee to hunt caribou. The few people that i know that hunted them didn't pay a fee.

Who are these people that you reference and what is their relationship to the Refuge, and reindeer herds? Anyone calling those numbers ought to have an idea who it is they are calling, eh?
