Just thinking we needed another 30-06 thread so I thought I would ask what you all thought the upper effective limits were for the cartridge, not the shooter, for range, size of game taken, and velocity? Also, what do you all base these opinions on?
Thanks

It's just such a versatile round. Deer ,elk, bear, moose 165gr or 180 gr are the best for me.It's not my choice for a long range rifle but other than that it will get about anything done !

I'd say probably moose is the largest game practical.

It can definitely take larger, but I don't see the need.

It's been knocking big Deer over in my part of the world for years!
Not too much recoil, blast, not hard on barrels, factory ammo everywhere & 110-240's has most covered down my way........Too many positives to list only 1 negative. I only own 1 frown . ATM that is lol
If was only allowed 1 cal it would be the GREAT 30-06! wink

Limitations? The 30-06 pities the fool who thinks that it would have silly "limitations".

No, seriously...the way some folks around here talk about it youd think its the next best thing since sliced bread.

I am not one of those believers.

The fact is, if you own a 30/06, you probably do not need another centerfire rifle...but don't mention that to my wife!

The super light custom rifle I wanted was not chambered in 30-06, only short actions so I bought the next best thing. 308win

I will not argue about the power of WSM since I used to own one.

The fact is, the 30-06 was made completely obsolete, overnight, by the appearance of the 300 RSAUM. Of course, no one will admit this, not even me. I keep looking at my 300 RSAUM and telling myself that, and then not believing it.

So I am going to go buy a 270!!

Hell, everything has limitations.

Only shoots a 180-grain bullet to 2800 or 2850 fps, within reasonable pressures.

Only shoots a 165-grain bullet to 100 fps or so more than that.

Not as good for 1000-yard engagement as a 338 Lapua mag supposedly. I'd never know that, of course, as I'm not a mil sniper and would not shoot at an animal from that distance.

Not as lightweight as a short action. In addition, I prefer a heavier barrel contour in a 30 cal, at least .640 muzzle, which adds a bit more weight.

But if I could only have one rifle, I would pick a .30-06. I believe others would select something else and be just fine, even if some of those were a .270 Win.

All kidding aside, I think the practical limitation of the 30/06 for North America is hunting the great bears. If you are out to bag a dangerous carnivore weighing a half ton or more, the 30/06 is not the tool for the job. It will suffice for any other North American game. Frankly, it is too much gun for most eastern hunting.

The limitations are in the shooter more than the gun. For a practiced and skilled N.A. rifleman and hunter, there are virtually no limitations in carrying a 30-06, or any other rifle of similar power.

Hell, more than a few ellies have fallen to a .30 calibre 220-gr. solid.
