Have a friend,his son is turning 18, he wants to purchase a 1911 45 acp for him. Is this legal in florida? For some reason I thought the boy would have to be 18. Long guns ok, not pistols. Am I correct?
The boy shot my kimber and fell in love with it.

Further, technically illegal to buy a handgun for someone else.

Further, technically illegal to buy a handgun for someone else. Actually, it is perfectly fine to buy a firearm as a gift for someone else as long as they are qualified to own it. It is not considered a straw purchase as long as the 'giver' purchases it with his/her own money. From a federal point of few, you can also own a handgun at 18. You just cannot buy one from a dealer until you are 21. Receiving one as a gift is ok, as is buying one from a private party. Heck, you can even get a ccw permit at 18 in a couple of states. State laws may tighen certain age limits, but it appears (from the link in the above post) that possession of the 1911 at 18 is perfectly fine in Florida. Sounds like a nice gift to a son.

Our Government will send them to war at 18 but they can't buy a handgun.....

Federal law dictates 21 to buy a handgun. State laws can vary but from my knowledge most if not all allow 18 to possess a handgun. Check your local laws.

There, I fixed it for you. Federal law does not prohibit an 18 year old from buying from a private party.

Got my first at 13. Carried it all everytime i was in the woods. As long as its a "gift" its legal. In ky its legal to open carry at 18.
Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Fed law only require persons to be 21 to purchase handguns from a dealer. Possession and ownership under 21 is okay under fed law. State laws may vary though.
