sal, we don't see much obsidian around here. Most of the stuff here is petrified wood. I found these points on a jobsite while framing a house. The owner didn't want them.... This thumb scraper was found in a driveway at a ranch. People had to have walked over it a bazillion times in the last 150 years.... I also found a slightly more modern artifact while remodeling the same ranchhouse. A Henry copper cartridge that had multiple firing pin hits, stuffed in a crack of the 1870's log house.....Maybe failed during an injun fight?..... That Henry cartridge could have been a reload. I've heard of them being reloaded before, they scraped out the old primer residue and stuffed the rim with ground up match heads, then I found this reference to it again: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,5282.0.html. I also recently read a report by someone who has done it with .22 rimfires in the past.

I've used match heads as a substitute for percussion caps.

Out again this afternoon. Nothing but chips and flakes on the ridge above an old homestead. But this was layin' up there, too... Them injuns musta traded for it and carted it halfway across the country, just like they do obsidian....grin

What would that round stone on the first picture be used for? Downrigger ball?
