I have not had an AR in a while, but I am thinking of picking one up again.

The ones I am considering are the Ruger SR556, the Remington R15/R25, and the Stag Model 7.

Caliber .223, 6.8, 243, and 308 are all being considered. The 260 may be in the mix too, but just haven't seen one I liked yet.

I am mostly looknig for pros/cons on the Ruger SR556 and th Remington R25, but I am all ears for your best suggestions.

no - Ruger=too heavy with a piston system that doesnt bring anything to the table....and the R-15....just go get a bushmaster off the walmart display and buy some Krylon and save yourself a $1000.

Rock River, Palmetto State, BCM etc....Colt is good too

For a self defense/dual use carbine Colt, or maybe Daniel Defense for a hunting gun Noveske rogue hunter in any of the 3 AR calibers you mentioned. You can go to Walmart these days and pick up a black rifle, they are everywhere.

NO comment on caliber choice.

Ruger, a buddy just bought one without asking advice... as noted, heavy, not as accurate as should be and what does anyone need a piston for anyway. And then its a Ruger on top of that...

Remington. Brother in law has 2. Both triggers suck like normal. One has a really rough chitty non accurate bore, the other one is about an MOA gun in 308.

Have a few folks that have stags, never had any issues.

Thanks everybody.

Any thoughts on the Ruger accuracy? Are piston guns less accurate inherently?

Piston is definitely inherently less accurate.

My buddies newest Ruger piston is about 4-5 inches at 100 yards with factory LC green tip.

That just takes the fun right out of it for me.

Me too. Ball, at worst, IE 'good' ball, should be around 2moa out of a good gun. Granted a lot of those shots will fall into 1 moa or so... there are always going to be fliers, but worse than 2-2.5 inches at 100 sucks IMHO. With ball anyway.

He has not bought any better ammo yet so I don't have the report on that part.

Me too. I am scratching the piston guns off the list. I am sure they'll get it ironed out eventually (my BAR shoots better than that, and it's a piston gun) but I want an accurate AR if I get another one.

the 300 AAC BLACKOUT has piqued my interest. Seems to have a lot going for it as a short-range medium game round, and is accurate as well.

Looking at Noveske. Lots of $$$$, but nice.

Any feedback on Daniel Defense ?

The R-25 is not-too-secretly made by DPMS. I have experience with 2 in 308 and have sold a couple in 243 and 7mm08. They are heavy, though not as much as M1A, and otherwise really could not use a lot of help with anything except the trigger, which is true of every non-NM AR. One of the 308s was shooting around 1.25" with stock trigger, and around 0.9" after JARD adjustable replacement trigger, with handloads. A solid choice if you like camo, and a better platform for optics than the M1A.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a R-25 for $1500 when you can get a much better gun for the same money. The RRA Predator has an EXCELLENT trigger and features the R-25 wishes it had. The lifetime warranty and match grade barrel make the choice easy.

Thanks . . . I am looking at the RRA Predator

Looks like a very nice package (and I am not too partial to the R25 camo anyway)
