Do you have a source for the story being a fake?

The original "interview" was in the August 25, 1977 issue of Rolling Stone. His denial of those actions was when he was a guest on Montel Williams talk show.

I'm a big Ted fan. Both in his hunting and music career. I'll have to agree that Ted's definately not for everyone. I really admire rock musicians like Ted and Zakk Wylde, who take a huge stand against drugs. I enjoy his shows and writings and the enthusiasm he puts into his work. When I say that I admire him, I'm not referring to him as being God-like, or trying to be like him. If you don't like him, that's certainly fine with me, but I think he's a pretty cool guy. Don't think I'm kissing his butt here, just thought that a few posts by his fans should be in here too.

I was a Navy corpsman with the USMC and couldn't stand the officer in charge of our unit (nobody liked him). We confronted our 1st Sergeant (Cate) and told him about the hatred we had for the puke and the 1st Sergeant gave us this bit of advise.
"You are either for or against what he stands for (the USMC). You better make up your mind quick, because I'll kick anyone's ass that goes up against him. He's on our side--he's in charge, and giving out the orders. Now tell me quick, who's side are you on?"
I'm on Ted's side--and we're goin' to win if you'll all fight with us. You don't have to like his sassy attitude. You'd talk like him too, if you were singing rock and roll for several decades.

David, I think its more than a bit of a stretch to say Ted was friends with Fred Bear. I like Teds music, always have always will. As a person he is a first class Azz. Trust me when I tell you he is not a pleasant individual. I have worked around him several times. I do like a LOT of what he does. The camp for kids is fantastic. Getting younger people interested in our sport is priceless. He also brings celeb status to the front of a lot of stuff like Dove hunting in Mi. etc. OTH Ted is strictly for Ted and wouldln't lift his coffee cup unless he is getting paid. If you were around when Ted first started his bow hunting group you might know what I mean. Paying to be part of a group and then getting nothing but a catalog to buy from Ted was a bad joke at best. Maybe age has mellowed him down a bit but I seriously doubt it. Anyhow, I think Ted does a lot of good, just don't elevate him to Godlike status. He puts his pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us.

NOT even a bit of a stretch in fact NO stretch at all......

Ted's dad and Fred Bear were very good friends and hunted together.......Fred taught Ted most of what he knows about shooting a bow.....there are several pictures of Ted and Fred together and shooting bows FWIW

That is why his theme song is about Fred; to try to repay him for all he's given Ted; to carry on, one of Fred's last words were in fact to Ted.....yes Nugent, to "carry on with what you're doing, don't let anyone or anything stop you, it's very important"......(that's close it's been a few years since I read the story, and it's not hard to find out IF you're still not convinced....

Agreed, he's NOT for everyone(niether am I nor mos t of us I'd venture).....

But "my hat is off to him" for all he's done, regardless of "other things" FWIW

Ted is a role model that is loud, boisterous, and speaks out against the use of drugs of any kind....
I hope he connects with just one person on staying away from drugs.
Besides he is pro gun and pro hunting, and isn't afraid to speak out about either.

I see Ted's back in the new "Successful Hunter" I just got today - looks like you can get used to it or move on.

I really enjoyed "God, Guns, and Rock'n'Roll" so I guess I'll get used to it.

Aceoky,
Yes Ted knew Fred Bear but I still think calling them friends is a bit of a streeetch. Splitting fine hairs I guess. Ted is Ted and he deserves credit for that. I personally think he has had his fair share of brain farts but IMHO he still does a whole lotta good. I don't care for him as a person but as his "Persona" I hope he keeps on getting through to younger people with the anti-drug, Rockn Roll, spirit of the wild Message.

I'm still not convinced that he'll ever convert a non hunter or anti gunner which is an issue. Worse yet is the folks that sit on the fence. If you don't present a civil intelligent argument they fall the wrong way. There is no doubt he has a following among current hunters/shooters, but they aren't exactly the ones we need to convert now are they.

More power to him, but IMHO, he doesn't do squat for those that need it. My nephews love him. But guess what? They were hunters/fishers/competitive shooters long before they heard of Ted. And FWIW now the one just wants to machine gun deer after watching Ted. Spray and pray. And especially after the Buff clip..... I will give that nephew one thing-- he did learn how to empty his 45 really quick. But he never hits a dang thing now..... All my hard work down the tubes so quick.

Jeff

BTW it was mentioned earlier-- why do we have to present a good image to the "soccer moms"? Because really the only thing somewhat guaranteed under the constitution is the right to own guns by civilians. Thats constantly under debate also. Anyway the rest, shooting, competition, ranges, hunting, fishing etc.... all that are privileges. Those that can be taken away from us by vote. And thats where it really matters. Its also where a madman on our side isn't exactly an asset.

Stetson; I guess that would have to be a "perception" or how does one define "friend", from what I've seen Fred say,(at least what's been written about that).. he considered both Ted and his dad as friends.....

Can't say he'd given either a kidney though!

I actually found out about that(by "accident") by being an avid bowhunter and reading everything "Fred" I could get my hands on...

rost.....

The "soccer moms" ARE major in this, as you know the "single parent household" is close to being the majority of them all....

..IF we reach them, we have a "fighting chance"??

Just my $.02 worth, and easily worth half that much, with inflation!

A lot of very good points here. I guess the biggest thing Ted does is create controversy which in turn draws attention. I would have to agree that there is about a zero chance of him converting an anti. If he gets through to some kids with the anti drug message then thats a good thing for sure. I havent seen the buffalo shoot but talking about shooting two deer with one arrow really makes me cringe.

I'm pretty conflicted by Ted. I like his music and his politics. His stand on drugs and the Second Amendment is admirable. But let's face facts. One of the reason that the shooting sports and hunting are taking such a beating is image. Image is everything. We know (and the antis know) that most hunters are average citizens who enjoy spending time outdoors with family and friends. Is that how we're protrayed? Nope. The antis get tons of mileage out of the goofs that chase deer across fields with pickup trucks, shoot out of windows and generally act like buffoons. The way Ted acts is, IMHO, buffoonish. His impact on the image of hunting and the shooting sports is detrimental due to his over the top character. I wish him luck on his anti drug crusade, but I wish he'd just content himself to go out and be an outdoorsman like the rest of us and not have to be crass centre of attention that he seems to need to be. Rost is right when he doubts that Ted will convert many non-hunters. That's our responsibility. Same as maintenance of our sport's image. If we keep leaving the work to be done up to other people, we're doomed.

Nugent is a showmen.

It made him a good living playing guitar, and I suppose it is making him a good living now.

Good or bad, you decide.

True. But if I wanted to see a clown, I'd go to the circus.
