Two pre-64 270s in my safe. Bottom one is headed to my Brother. I didn't show it but Mama has a post 64 featherweight so there are actually three 270s in the safe right now. wink

If you hit the reply button the pictures are much sharper.

Good looking rifles Idared. The top one has some nice figure.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Thanks, it's not quite a super grade, same wood grade, but no cross bolt (just the fake dot) and standard swivels. It's the same stock that Winchester put on the Sporter Deluxes in 2008.

I was shooting 150 Ballistic Tips on antelope and 175 Partitions on elk and deer, but didn't take either of those with that rifle last year.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some beautiful rifles in here, however I have always admired guns that have had to work for a living. I am as proud as a new Papa about every dent ding and abrasion that my guns have received in their years of service. I have included photographs of a 1948 vintage 270 Win. owned and used by an old rancher in Colorado. Best of his recallection he has shot over 100 elk and too many deer to remember. His is the rifle with the red recoil pad. The shiny in the photograph is the sun glaring off an area that has vertually no blue left on it. What little bluing that is left on the gun is very faint. You will also notice that the checkering is worn flat from handling. The other is a 1948 vintage 30-06 that I used for many years while big game hunting in Colorado. It has accounted for many deer, elk, antelope and coyotes. My wife is too good of a photographer as it does not show many of it's character marks. You will notice there is vertually no finish around the pistol grip and floor plate from the years of being carried and used. Checkering again is worn flat, little blueing on the floor plate and no blueing left on the bold handle. Though not a Winchester, I am adding a photograph of my old prewar Colt Woodsman that I used while guiding big game hunters. I believe you can tell from what finish is left that it has led a colorful life also.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes it is a new stock that was made using a supergrade pattern I have. Believe it or not the blank was bought on Ebay for less than $50.00. wink

I couldn't agree with you more. Compared to my rifle before its face lift, those look pretty darn nice. Mine had been well used by me for many years. It was on its second stock as the first got broken when I took a nasty tumble in some pretty steep country in North Idaho. The checkering was worn pretty bad on the second stock from being carried so much. It was on its second or third recoil pad but other than that it was still a fairly stable stock considering all it had been through. Add to that a lot of the blue had been worn, especially the triggerguard-floorplate area which was getting pretty shiny as was the barrel as well. In short, I was getting embarrassed when folks would look at it and wonder how a rifle could look so bad.

Anyway, one day I happened on a picture of a pre-64 Super Grade and thought that it might be fun to try and see if I could bring my rifle back to look something like that. As luck would have it I came across a Super Grade stock pattern for an absolute song, I think about $8.00 if I recall correctly, and also a black walnut blank for less than $50.00. The blank is very dense, hence a bit heavier than I would like, but I won't be doing any real hard hunting with the rifle in the high country anymore anyway. My gunsmith profiled the stock blank, to the pattern I found, for me and refinished the metal to as close as original as he could. I am very pleased with all his work on it. My brother shaped, finished and checkered the stock for me. He shaped and checkered it as close as he could to the pictures in the "Rifleman's Rifle" book by Rule. I still had the original steel buttplate so it was used.

I didn't do all this just to make a nice looking rifle but rather to give a facelift to a well used companion after 50 plus years of trustworthy service. I still take it out, and there are some minute marks, but I admit I am pretty careful with it now. I don't feel guilty about it because it has paid its dues and then some. I will pass it on to my grandson someday and let him put the real marks on it.

Got to you love Mdl 70s. Here's my 1952 30-06 topped with a Weaver VX-7. It shoots the Sierra 165 GKs right at 1 MOA. They are classic guns indeed...and as Bob mentioned..does it get any better?

Sorry for the marginal images.
