Just read Idajo's thread on his casting problem. Interesting. Have a question related to something he mentioned, and thought it warranted a new thread.

Idajo stated he's been using WD-40 to preserve his moulds from rust between casting. I've been using Break Free CLP. Isn't there some Teflon in CLP? If so, will that be detrimental in the long run to the moulds' castability?

Also thought that since my BP lube (Emmert's with lanolin) is water/soap/detergent soluable, why don't I just use that on a patch to lube the outside of my moulds when storing them. Some hot soapy water and they ought to clean right up, shouldn't they???

Just thinking out loud, really, but thought of this and thought I'd throw it out for comment/knowledge/experience. Just seems like a natural to me .... or does it?

I think one mistake we all make is putting our Anti-cor of choice on , while the blocks are still too hot........and would buy into this....for VERY long term storage.........The " Pores" in Meehanite iron are pretty open , at 300 degrees F......and no clue here as to at how low a temp they close.

I've been using that NAPA Lube Gard, when I use anything at all..................that being the High Summer months, when the evaporative cooler is running in the shop....it can play hell with the lathe bedways , and other machine surfaces, too.

Over on Hamilton's Cast Bullet list.......they discussed some kind of " Vapor Chip".......put this in a baggie, with yer' mold blocks.......................I'm scared to death of some of the chemistry used in the new, and better products......molecules with a name one paragraph long, and such.....TC 1000 bore butter was what I used to use, and it seemed to work OK.....A good soak, in Hardware store Acetone, or Laquer thinner, is not a bad idea, IMHO, prior to gettin' the ball rolling, after storing them , with an Anti-cor, of ANY stripe.
