Ive been looking at the ruger SA revolvers for a while,and now Im thinking about the super blackhawk.I was going to get a blackhawk in 44 magnum.........then I found out there is no blackhawk in 44 magnum.So that led me to the super blackhawk.What do yall think about the super blackhawks?Would a super BH with a 7 1/2 barrel be really uncomfortable to carry around?Does it balance well?Do they feel like the blackhawks?

They are all blackhawks the super has a different hammer, grip and trigger guard. If you get the 44 in the 4-5/8" or 5-1/2" it will have the blackhawk grip and trigger guard. I like the SBH for the hammer and longer grip, then cut the barrel down to 5-1/2" and have the sights put back on. Been using one for almost 30years

If you're going to hunt extensively with it, get the SBH with 7 1/2" bbl. If not, just a packing gun for whatever reason, get the SBH in stainless with the 4 5/8" bbl. I have a SBH with 7 1/2" bbl., which is very accurate, but unless I'm handgun hunting, my single action packing pistol is my Blackhawk .45 Colt in 4 5/8" bbl.

My two hunting buds carry the newer stainless SBH in the 4 5/8" bbl., and they find them more handy than the longer barreled Ruger.

I find that my B.H. .45 Colt with 4 5/8" bbl., feels just as well balanced and comfortable as their SBH .44s with same length bbl.

I'm in the same camp finding that the Super Blackhawk grip frame fits me better than any of the other Ruger frames but prefer a 4 5/8" barrel for carry purposes. I ended up putting a SBH gripframe on a 4 5/8" .41 Magnum Blackhawk and it is my favorite SA.

7.5"bbl. is pretty much too long for doin much besides gettin in the way. Its nice for shootin, tho.
Don like shoulder rigs, prefer belt carry, an find the 5.5 is a good compromise.
The shortie bbl. works best for quick deployment, sacrifices most-cant pull the base pin as easy, less muzzle heavy, so on.
Absolutely hate the dragoon grip/square trigger guard.
For those who like it, fine, find it personally awkward an time consuming for anything but a one handed grip, find it increases felt recoil-me n my hands, maybe diff for you-an while historically significant, offers no real advantage, too many disadvantages.
Best SBH 5.5. Stainless is most weather resistant, but blue is best when the sun is bright.

I love my SBH with a 7.5bbl I carry it whenever I am out in the hills around our property. DeSantis makes a nice angled holster that I rarly find in the way. I also use a sholder rig somtimes but I find the DeSantis on the hip is the way to go for me.

Fit is the key. Some of us have small hands. My SBH hurt me every time I shot it. I couldn't hold it properly. I bought the Bisley kit from Brownell's and the transformation was magic. It fits me now, and only because it now fits I have discovered that it's the most accurate revolver I've ever owned.

I recommend that anyone considering buying a Ruger single action try to shoot as many models as possible before picking one.

If a person does not mind the rib on the barrel for scope rings, (I like it) the Ruger super blackhawk hunter model is available with standard grips and with bisley grips. The bisley hunter lacks the square trigger guard, and from the photos I have seen so does the standard grip hunter model.

I really like that I can get my pinky finger onto the grip to help control the gun with my new bisley 41 mag hunter model super blackhawk. That is not possible for me with the standard grip.

I started with a 7.5" SBH, in 1978. Eventually had the barrel cut to 4 5/8" with zero regrets. Much handier. The squareback triggerguard always gave my middle finger a painful beating. Eventually, after trying a couple different grips, I settled with the Hogue. The Hogue fills in the whole space behind the triggerguard, making it impossible to beat up your uppermost gripping finger. But, the grip is fairly large and may not suit smaller hands so well.

I have found that the 5.5' BH works for me.

The Hogue grip also makes the gun sit higher in the hand.
Nobodys mentioned it on this thread, but the Bisley model is also a Blackhawk, and ballances very nicely in 5.5 and 7.5" barrel lengths. It's a love it or hate it grip design, and I love it------and would recommend it for heavy .44mag loads. While doing things right, I'd also recommend getting one in the .45Colt. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I you're going to carry it around while doing other things, I think that the 7.5" barrel is too long. I have a 10.5" model that shoots great as a hunting or target revolver, but is a royal pain to carry around. So much so that now I just carry a rifle instead.

You may want to wait. Ruger is coming out with a special edition which harkens back to their old model Flattop 44 Mag., which was one of the first produced, along with the Smith model 29, in 1956. The difference will be that it will be a new model. Cosmetically, it will appear as the originals though.

I am wondering if this will be built on the new Vacquero frame, which is smaller than the Blackhawks/Supers/Old Vacqueros. If so, it will be easier for folks with smaller hands to handle, being nearly identical to a Colt SAA. It WILL be in 6 1/2" bbl. lengths only. Right now the Flattop 357 Mag. is being produced and sold. I don't know if the 44 will be identical save for caliber or not. Just a thought...

I've had all sorts of Blackhawks, Supers and Vacqueros. Bisley's too. All seemed fine for packing, but I have never had one of the ten inch bbls. I personally like a fairly long sight radius. The 7 1/2"s are a bit much, but even the 5 1/2"s seem a bit short. Maybe this 6 1/2" will be perfect.

I had a 7 1/2" SBH, cut it down to 4 5/8" and rounded the trigger guard. I found that the 4 5/8" has a neutral balance, and I prefer a slightly barrel heavy revolver. It sure was great to pack though.

IMHO, the perection in Ruger single actions is the 5 1/2" bisley that's been roundbutted, perfect grip, perfect balance, and enough sight radius to shoot way out there.
