Einstein once said,

'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again

and expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats ....

yet they are still POOR.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up

by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man

by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage

by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them,

what they could and should do for themselves."

It looks like a chicken-egg thing to me. In addition to the lack of Republican mayors, you also have a population of blacks that are unemployed and living in public housing. In the case of Newark, you have lavish public housing that was just built, mostly with your money, to replace what was already there that the natives destroyed. All of these cities also have a huge drug problem.

The odd thing about Newark is that smack dab in the middle of the shiz hole, is an area that is populated by the hard working Portuguese. This area, also subject to a black major, is a thriving place where you can walk around at night, people come in for dinner, etc. I also believe that similar areas of Miami exist where you have hard working Cubans that have cleaned up parts of the city and moved out the undesirables.

I've always thought that in Newark, among the blacks, you have about 20-30% that are either criminals or have no interest in anything but a handout. The rest, I believe, might be interested in a better life....but they ain't going to find jobs in Newark and none are likely to come along.

If they tear down the public housing, that would get people out of what has been a dying jobless city for 35 years. Instead, I would prefer to see the govt provide rental vouchers to families that could be used anywhere. This program could be more easily monitored, temporary in duration, and subject to drug testing. You're not going to improve anything unless you move these people to areas where there are jobs...assuming they want jobs. This was one of the benefits of Katrina, it moved out the entrenched ghetto from the city and scattered them around the country.

It will be an unsolved mystery, forever. This is due to the sad fact that it will never be looked at honestly. That would be racist.

I'd be interested in the racial demographic to see if poverty and race stay consistent?

I always wondered why these big company towns ended up being the worse off. You'd figure with good prosperity, it would be the other way around.

I'd say take a look at loss of manufacturing jobs first, then look at immigration, legal and otherwise.

NYC, LA, SF and Seattle aren't on the list, and they have plenty of democratic input (mayors, city council, etc)

If it was as simple as the letter behind the mayors name, they would have fixed it by now.

All those tax breaks for moving jobs off shore are probably the key.

The manufacturing jobs disappeared 35 years ago from these cities...the reality is that they aren't coming back.

Unions might have helped it along but it would have happened anyway because it's a lot cheaper to make plastic and pot metal crap in China than it is here. Taxes have nothing to do with it. Even non-union wages make this type of manufacturing unprofitable.

The cities that could adapt to other types of industry aren't on this list. Why are Cleveland and Newark [bleep] holes but Indianapolis and Pittsburgh are thriving? You've got to have a conservative pro-business, non-corrupt, local government. Rampant liberal corruption is another thing all those cities have in common.

NYC isn't on the list because its too expensive for poor people to live there, they all moved to Newark and Irvington because that's where the public housing ghettos are located.

Illegal immigration is a problem but it didn't ruin the inner cities. Most of the first generation immigrants that live in these cities, illegal or otherwise, have a work ethic that far exceeds their native counterparts. If it wasn't for first generation immigrants in Newark, there wouldn't be a good section of town.

The very poor cities usually have the highest Black Population and the most welfare recipients

WWII demand for labor brought blacks to America's manufacturing cities like Detroit and Philadelphia.

By the 1960's, the black were on welfare and committing crime instead of working like they had done 20 yrs before.

White people fled the black crime wave.

Industry fled the black crime wave.

And it is all whitey's fault.

Have worked in 6 of the above cities and I asked what happened to these once great cities. Was told riots in the 60's, white flight to suburbs resulting in higher crime poorer schools which resulted in more white flight. And to a lesser extent loss of manufacturing. ( Detroit, Buffalo) And of course public housing and welfare.

Illegal immigration has negatively affected Miami and El Paso

Zimbabwe is some of the best real estate on the Planet, if you could get rid of the locals.

Right now the place is so poor, crime ridden, and corrupt, that it is almost impossible to visit.

If I could live so long, I would bet within 1,000 years, the Chinese will get rid of the locals there and have that land.

I've got news for you. Blacks left Detroit for the same reason as the white folks...

At least the smart hard working ones did.

Detroit had it coming. When Detroit elected their first black mayor he said " We don't need no whiteys anymore". I'd be packing too. Wouldn't you? You can't condone burning houses down and think "whitey " is gunna stay. Unions can be blamed plenty cause Honda and Toyota are not dieing, nor are their towns going to hell. Should have machine gunned the first pos to light a match on holloween too. Make a statement arson is not excepted .
