Wondering how it compares to the VXII; 6-18X in particular.

I have both VX-II's and the newer VX-2. The VX-2 as mentioned now has 1/4" click adjustments and mulitcoating. To me it is every bit as good a scope as several older VX-III's I own. IMO- The new VX-3's are pretty much on par with a lot of European glass- plus they are generally lighter, have better eye relief, a warranty that doesn't require shipping to Germany or whatever. I prefer portable rifles, and 24+ ounces of scope doesn't much help with that.

I once bought a gently used Swarovski in the 14-16 top end range x56. Great piece of glass. put it on a medium to light '06. When I hefted the rifle, wow. I took it off and scaled the scope and rings. It weighed a ton. Took it back, traded it in for a Leupold at about a pound less (and less money also) and lived happily ever after. I suppose it would have been a great stand or bean field glass, but in those days I only kept two general purpose hunting rifles on hand. jack

The VX-2 as mentioned now has 1/4" click adjustments and mulitcoating. The VX-II has had both click adjustments and full multicoating for several years now.

^ Yup, the knobs are just coin-operated, rather than finger adjustable, that's all.

I too am looking at a VX-2 in 6-18 CDS for a Mark v in .257 Wb. I am picking between it and a VX3 4.5 x14. How does the magnifcation ring turn? I have newer VX2 3x9 that is tight as hell. Any real experiance is appreciated.

Leupold changed the windage/elevation adjustments and the lens coating in 2004, beginning with suffix "M.

Initially the VX-II got MC4 only on the external lenses, but after some time they got it throughout. I don't know that time point offhand though.

According to Leupold, 2004, suffix "M", is when Leupold changed the lens coatings and full coated them all with MC4.
"VX-II
The VX-II line (2003 and older) uses a combination of Vari-X III and Vari-X II (discontinued) technology. VX-IIs also utilize -MOA click adjustments, but the lens coatings are unique. The external lenses are coated with Multicoat 4 and the internal lenses are coated with magnesium fluoride.
Beginning in 2004, the VX-II line is fully multicoated and will perform comparably to the discontinued Vari-X III line."

Update: took the wife for a drive in Amish country today. Walked into a gun store while there and, lo and behold, there was a 6-18X VX2 sitting there for a price that I just couldn't turn down! Just before that, at another dealer I found one with CDS (more $) but wanted to check out a LRV reticle, which this has, too. Glad I waited. "Seek and ye shall find", I guess. A cursory comparison at home with a SF 6-24X Bushnell 4200 Elite dialed down to 18X showed the new, improved VX2 holding its own against the Elite glass-wise. The Bushnell always seemed to fuzz out at infinity setting, but the Leupold is still sharp at long range. Eye relief is much better, too. Controls are tight but not too stiff. Was originally wanting a LR VX3, but can live without the side-focus and a little better glass for more bang for the buck.
