Remember all of AAs lot to lot HUGE inconsistency issues. They may have that worked out but years ago it was a HUGE issue, and hence I won't buy AA due to that.

Had not heard of that 495,thanks for the tip. I bought 4lbs for 65 bucks all the same lot at a gun show 2 wks ago. Figured it would be ok with bulk Hornady 55 gr fmj's so far it shoots ok nice tight groups from the 700v but the AR's ren't giving me the same yet. Magnum man

I agree with the folks that say you can't go wrong with TAC..

And years earlier I'd buy big lots like 100-200 pounds of surplus 844/846 if available.... wasn't teh best powder but for the price it was a steal..

844 and 846 are fine powders. Nothing wrong with them for most shooting. I wouldn't shoot them for highpower or group matches, but for everything else, why not?

What is your definition of "best"?

Personally, I've tried Rel-7, H335, IMR4895, IMR4198, and Win 748.

Winchester 748 when lit by a CCI450 primer has given me the best accuracy with 52-55gr bullets and no pressure signs. The 52gr Speer HP is sub-MOA everytime out and does a nasty job on critters.

I like TAC, but one needs to specify what bullet weight.

The caveat to 748, is if you are in a state taht gets stupid heat..> I'd stay away from it, way to much pressure when it gets stupid hot outside...

Varget is great with the heavier bullets. I like TAC with the lighter ones.

Varget is the best powder in the .22-204 with 75 gr. Amax/VLD's. Best accuracy, best velocity and most consistent.

I keep your experience in mind rost', that's why I keep it about a grain under max. wink We don't really see crazy hot temps in NY, but the load I use has proven safe in other guns over a long period of time. cool

Varget with heavy bullets and coated ones at that, just doesn't bump teh speed up to where it should be. Non coated does just fine.

End point as many have noted, WHAT are you going to be running bullet wise belongs with this question.
