Good evening from a new poster. Does anybody know anything interesting about the Savage Model 99E Series A? It's in 250 Savage caliber has a tang safety, and is just about my favorite centerfire rifle, but the nomenclature has me confused! Thanks

99E and tang safety don't go together. Where are you reading the 99E Series A?
Can you post or attach a picture?

Your rifle's serial number and Lever Boss Code will be of great help, too.
Many times, when the Lever Boss Code is requested by a Forum Member, a newbie doesnt know what a Lever Boss" or the "Lever Boss Code is.
What is the Lever Boss Code? Look for a small, possibly indistinct oval on the receiver's extension on the bottom, front side of the receiver in which the lever rotates... that is the "Lever Boss".
There should be an inspector's number (like 16 or 17)) plus a letter in that oval (like a D or F) so the whole "code" might look like this 17D. The numbers and the letter inside the small oval is known as the "Lever Boss Code".
But since they didn't impress that oval very well, you may not see the complete oval or the complete inspector's numberor even the complete letter, but hopefully, you will be able to read the letter inside the oval. The letter inside the oval is the key to determining the year of manufacture of your rifle. The first year Savage Arms used the Lever Boss Code was in 1949 and they begun by using the letter "A" in 1949, then the letter "B" in 1950, the letter C in 1951, the letter D in 1952 and so on.
As an example, on my 1953 "EG", only the rear half of the oval plus the letter "E" shows up, and even the letter is very faint (but fairly distinct). The Lever Boss Codes letter "E" indicates my rifle was made in 1953.
The Lever Boss Code's letter will indicate the date of manufacture for sure on Model 99s manufactured AFTER 1948... or for as "sure" as anything gets when dealing with Model 99 Savage rifles and Savage factory information.
If youll tell us your rifles Lever Boss Code, we should be able to tell you the year of manufacture. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Lightfoot- The inscription on the top of the barrel reads the Model 99 Lightfoot- The inscription on the top of the barrel is what reads Model 99 Series A, right over the Westfield Mass. U.S.A. marking. To the left of these is SAVAGE and to the right .250 SAV. I have no photo skills right now; maybe can arrange this though. Ron T, I see no marks with my lens such as you describe; I gather that I am to look at the front of the trigger guard where the lever pivot is located (?). Serial # is E04122. I thank you both for your interest in my question- I think my rifle is a modern one with little in the way of excess value, but I always like to find out what I can about my weapons. It shoots a 100 grain bullet consistantly into a round group of 1.5 inches or less, and this is what I like most about it!

It is a late Model 99A Saddlegun, I will venture a guess at about somewheres about 1982 Mid-year. There will be no boss code. I have a 99A with an A series number, nice rifle, will shoot the heavier 120 grain bullet great, even the Noslers. I would like to see a picture of this, you can see mine at http://savagela.org Les

Thanks Les, my rifle looks just like your photo except for that elegant barrel band front sling swivel on yours. It's amazing that these weapons were designed in the 19th century; what modern rifle has comparable features? I will try to take a picture of my 99, but don't hold your breath waiting.

Les, nice web sight. Some good info and photos on it.
Grammar is important. Capitol letters are the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" & "helping your uncle jack off a horse".
