7STW and a 300 RUM, both are fast, flat and accurate and will handle any need at any "reasonable" distance. STW is in a Savage and the RUM is in a Rem 700.

I bought a heavy barrelled 6mm rem to learn with, as of yet I haven't progressed past it. I'm not shooting a live things though if that makes a difference.
Experience is something you get, just after you needed it.

I have two. My 308 because it was my first really accurate rifle and 264 Win Mag even though it requires "cleansing" to ethically own one.
(Cleansing procedure involves ridding the household of all 7MMs and/or .270's)Hahahaha "Really accurate" is key, IMHO, especially with high end turret scopes available today. My favorite is a custom pre-64 M-70 with 26" Krieger sporter in 6.5-284. It wears a Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 BT with Outdoorsmans turret calibrated to my best load of Vv 165 pushing a 140 gr. SST at 2,950 fps. It does about the same with the 140 VLD. It will shoot 4 1/2" at 600 yds. DF

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

It did good, but I found that with that set up the scope had to be at full power (18X) for the TDS to be accurate. That proved awkward in NM, making a 385 yds shot with Harris bipod, sitting. I traded scopes and went another direction. With the Z5 turret, range and power are now independent variables, much easier to manage, IMHO. The gun has Borden's Bumps on the bolt, action was blue printed and it has a Jewell trigger. I pillared, glassed, torqued and free floating the barreled action into a Jon Sundra, Boyd laminated stock. Not a McM, but it works pretty well.

The bottom rifle, now wearing a Swaro Z3 4-12x50 BT with Outdoorsmans turret is an Ed Brown Damara in .300 Win Mag. It's another good long range gun, shooting 180 gr. NBT's at 3,050 fps with RL-22 into very tight groups, almost as accurate as the 6.5-284. Ed Brown used Shilen barrels, McM light fill stocks, Jewell triggers and his own control feed proprietary 704 action. I write in past tense, as he no longer makes these fine rifles, concentrating on pistols.
The 180 gr. NBT's have the same B.C. and POI as 180 gr. NAB's. I can swap bullets for the type game I'm going to shoot. The M-70 all up is around 9 pounds, 7 ounces, the Damara is a bit over 8 pounds as shown.

.270 Win and a Leupold 2.5x8 with turrets.
That's about all the rifle I care to burden myself with. I'm not fond of long, heavy rifles nor Hubble rifle scopes...JMO I have a great range where we can shoot an honest 500 yards and that's as far as I would ever consider shooting at a game animal. Game here, for me, is blacktail bucks and cow elk ( I bowhunt for bulls ). I'll do whatever I can to cut the range to <300, before considering a shot.

Yes, 308 is the most versatile calibre, with bullet weights from 102 Gr(Sako Range), up to 220Gr., generally 150gr to 168grs. 1)Get the best Rifle you can affford,2) buy a copy of Jeff Cooper's The Art of the Rifle,(read, study, inwardly digest it) and 3)find out what your Barrel performs best with and stay with it, then it's just plenty of practice with a lot of fun!

I fancy a .308 however and feel everyone should own one and learn the basics of long range using one. I do apologise for jumping in from the side. However, about 7 years ago I had the distinct privelige of hunting with a US sniper fresh from Afghanistan. Walking down a dry river bed we saw some monkeys way down yonder. Mark (not his real name) said: May I shoot one? I said: If you hit it, I'll pay for it. He said: it's about 600 yards and Mike said (with the range finder) it's 617 yards. Mark took the shot off-hand and we found blood!! I paid for the monkey no contest. Man I liked the 308 from then on.
