Blue painter's tape. It sticks to cold metal better than electrical tape and is hard to miss visually. I take the tape off before shooting. Rather than wrap like some folks do, I just go over the muzzle and leave a folded flap to grab when taking it off. A few wraps around the barrel provide storage. Here are two rifles ready to go hunting, tape ready when needed:

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

Saran wrap and a rubber band.

Really? It's a smart and simple piece of insurance. I use electrical tape.

Obviously, you're not from around here. Yes. Blue tape and it must be wound counter to ones twist.

Finget cots, tight enough to stay on, or tape the base of the finger cot around the barrel so it stays put. Or cut the pinky out of s rubber surgical glove and tape it at the base. Blue painters tape has an aggressive enough adhesive to stay put, but leaves no residue after it is removed. That is what it is designed to do. Electrical tape on the other hand, has a more aggressive adhesive that will leave a residue not the metal after it is removed. Easy enough to remove granted, but still present. The adhesive in electrical tape is designed to stick to itself, and not let go. The adhesive in blue painters tape is designed to adhere to a more broad range of surfaces, hold tight, and release easily. My $0.02 for what it's worth.
Oh, or you can spend a few more dollars and buy the special muzzle covers that are mfg for that specific purpose... forget who the mfg is but a quick google search should reap fruit.
God Bless America!

Really ? I've used lots of it and never has it stuck to anything as well as electrical tape. No, I've never tested it in cold weather, but I've hunted alot of electrical tape wrapped muzzles in temps down to -20 plus and never had any problems. E

FWIW, you can shoot thru the tape with no loss of accuracy nor change of poi.
Aim for the exit hole.

Jayco No but I've seen a lot of old rusty bores too. Have little doubt they missed a lot of shots or blew up more barrels than those who don't wrap, cover, etc

Small Children Balloons work great.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.
