So from what I can gather, the cartridge was designed as an improvement over the .450 Alaskan - nearly the biggest thing that would fit in an 1886 Winchester; fitting well in a #1. It's a .50-110 necked to .475 caliber. I have now seen a couple online in the caliber, and they look like standard 1H's, but in a 26" C barrel.

Turnbull has data online. It appears to beat the .450-400 by 150 fps with a 400 gr bullet. Barnes has bullets designed for it, and I would think for reduced loads, one could run bullets intended for the .480 Ruger/.475 Linebaugh.

I had been wanting a .450 Nitro, but this one gives me pause. anyone handle one yet?

I "Googled" the .475 Turnbull to see exactly what it was. Here's part of what I found:

January 20, 2010

Bloomfield N.Y. Ammunition manufacturer CORBON will begin production of the .475 Turnbull cartridge in collaboration with Doug Turnbull Restoration, now that the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) has certified the rifle cartridge for mass production.

SAMMI certification requires extensive testing from specification design to usage temperatures to ensure user safety. Tests show that when fired from a 26 inch barrel, the .475 Turnbull cartridge weighing 400 grains has a velocity of 2,150 fps with a force of 4,107 ft. lbs.

The .475 Turnbull rifle cartridge is the brainchild of Doug Turnbull, a world-renown leader in high quality firearms restoration for over 20 years. Turnbull has spent the last several years designing a modern ballistic cartridge for vintage lever action rifles, specifically the Model 1886 Winchester.

Based on the Winchester 50-110 or the 50 Express, the 475 Turnbull case is shortened from 2.4 down to 2.2 in length. The loaded overall length should be 2.65 to 2.78 so that the feeding will not be affected whether in the Winchester model 71 or 1886 actions. The .475 Turnbull rifle cartridge has proven itself by taking a full gamut of animals including prairie dogs, antelope, deer, hippos, buffalo, rhinos and elephants.

Your 1886 .475 is magnificent. Both the practice loads and the Barnes TSX group into a ragged hole at 50 yards (from standing rest, not bench rest), the Speer bullets about dead-on and the Barnes TSX an inch high, said Craig Boddington. Perfect! I like the fit and finish; functioning is also smooth as silk. What a pleasure!

Doug Turnbull Restoration is taking original Winchester 71 and 1886 rifles and re-barreling or re-boring them to the new .475 Turnbull caliber. They are also taking the Browning and USRAC/Winchester manufactured 1886 and 71 models and doing the same alterations. Turnbull also manufactures its own guns in the 71 and 1886 style doing complete re-barreling and restocking to meet the needs of the buyer.

One down side I can think of, compared to say, the .458 Lott, or .450 Nitro, is the availability of semi-pointed bullets in .458. The .475 stuff all appears to be flat pointed, for use in lever actions.

Doug has been posting about the cartridge on his facebook page. He was hunting in Texas with it last week.

Ruger has just released a factory run of the #1s in the 475 Turnbull, the price seems to be hanging around the $800 mark and holding. Haven't been able to find out what the number rifles in the run was, still looking. His shop is close to my in-laws, so have visited and touchy/feely-ed about every firearm in the shop. All of his gun run "heavy" just based on the feel and the caliber requirements, IMO. The shop is worth the trip, they have many interesting restorations inprogress, and another vault full of ones waiting to start. I'm in the market, but still dealing the rational of "needing" a monster caliber.

I cannot find my good scale right now but it looks to be right under 8 1/2lb's. I can tell you it is one of the best balanced Number Ones I have ever shot or carried.

Doug took a beautiful Nilgai on that trip. I have used mine for Bison and Black Bear in Saskatchewan and both were one shot kills with 400gr, TSX. Neither went 5' and the bear was stone dead before it ever hit the ground. The guide had never seen anything like it.

I am working on loads for this fall using 480 Ruger Bullets specifically the 275gr Barnes and hope to push them at 1900-2000fps.
I am hopeful of taking a NY Whitetail with it.

Where are you finding a "#1s in the 475 Turnbull, the price seems to be hanging around the $800 mark and holding" ?

Ive been in a dozen sites and had four quotes. Even used are more than that for a Linebaugh.

God Bless

Looks to me like that one is the Linebaugh, and ,480 Ruger. It's different than the .475 Turnbull.

There was a quick run of the Ruger factory #1 on GB about 6 weeks ago, two seperate dealers were selling at the $800 price. Their sales only ran about two-three weeks before they ran out of rifles, one shop that I spoke with only had 3-4 rifles. Nobody was giving any details on how many were made by Ruger. Doug's custom #1 run more than that price.

Hey Tex, Ya aughta consider running that 50-110 WCF hull as is, they are loads of fun, and on a Number One Ruger, you can load that mutha up for as much fun as one mans shoulder can stand if ya wanna. laugh

I think for "a shoulder proof test" one need only buy a .450 NE. In the #1 one can load warmer than factory - probably a lot warmer than factory, and you'd easily beat the .458. The rifles only weigh something like 8 lbs, and they have no silly muzzle brake. crazy grin

The Turnbull is interesting, but I don't think anyone has .475 spitzers, and that's what I'd likely want to shoot. Of course a big flat point would hammer game at short ranges.

I have about decided that my .480 SRH could be reamed a little, and accept .475 Linebaugh rounds. Then I add a #1 in the caliber and suddenly I have a pretty fierce rifle/revolver combo smile
