Hey guys. I need to get these things scoped. Which way would you go. I'm going to be using the steel talleys pictured on the upper rifle (308 fwt). The lower rifle pictured is my 30-06. Still waiting for my other bases to come in the mail....I'll be running the low talley rings which will allow a 40 mm objective scope for clearance (I've checked): My first idea was to run some Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36's on them but then I don't think the mounts/rings will allow for the short mounting space of the tube.. Let me know as I'm all ears and would appreciate the help. Thanks guys....

My two fwts, a 270 and a 30-06, both wear FX-II 6X36 mattes. Perfect scope for the rifles.

+1 to what Rick said!
The 6X36 would be prefect for the pair.

I'd go with 2-7x Leupolds in matte finish. That's what I use on my Pre-64, .270 Win. Have never needed anything more in the field. Bear in Fairbanks

Another option that is especially fitting with those rifles in those calibers would be an older Leupold M8 4x28 (long tube). The 4x33 is also a great scope, very bright and light.

Took a measurement BSA, you have 5 1/8" to mount with on a 2.5-8X36. You may be right, with the lightweights I turn the ring end facing each other toward the center of the action. Is that an option with the steel talley's?
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

I personally like the old weaver straight 4.75x. A great scope in my opinion.

I had a 2.5X8X36 Leupold VX3, and currently a 2X7X32 Nikon Monarch on my 257 Roberts Model 70. I think the Nikon is brighter. May change some of mine to Talley mounts.

I'm partial to straight tubed Leupolds, 3x's mostly but in this case a 1-4x:

Like others have already mentioned, I'm also kind of partial to straight tube models on vintage rifles . That said, I use the Leupy VX-3 1.5x5 on several of my rifles, an excellent scope that IMO doesn't really get much credit.

I already had a bausch and lomb elite 4200 2.5-10x40 that I had off of one of my other 30-06's to check. Like I said in my first post, a 40mm objective scope clears, maybe I should have been more specific. I did check bolt handle clearance with that scope and no problemo's to speak of.....I was however, thinking a gloss scope would be the ticket but guys are recommending the matte finish....

I ran across a gloss leupold VXIII 1.5-5 today. How much are they worth and can a guy live with friction adjustments???

Don't know what the VXIII is worth, but I have friction scopes and they stay put as well as any click adjusters I have.
I just have to wear my glasses to see how much to turn the knob vs feeling the clicks. Not a problem.

Both my pre'64 M/70's are equipped with Leupold 2-7X Vari-X II's, one in Redfield Jr one piece mount and the other in a Griffin & Howe double lever QD mount.

Steel-tube Weaver K4s or K6s would look like they belong, if you want to go retro.

Many of ours have VX 3 2.5-8x36, a great fit along with many of the other combos shown here.
