I've been thinking about adding another single shot rifle - with modest recoil - for general purpose hunting. Would also like to do some informal target shooting out to 600 yards.
Had been thinking of a .45/70 in a Sharps or something, as I have a fair bit of experience with that cartridge, but then I saw that Shiloh Sharps offers their rifles in .30-40 Krag - and that got me thinking a bit...
Anyone have experience with a .30-40 single shot afield or at the range?
Thoughts?
Thanks! Guy

I believe Sharps make a .30-40, but they are very expensive. A friend of mine had a Remington Rolling Block in 30-40 awhile back.

I once saw a "Liberty" Ruger #3 so chambered. Sure wish I'd have bought it!! Cheers

I've used a Ruger #3 .30-40 for about twenty five years. While mostly a cast bullet gun, it's quite accurate with the Hornady 180 grain InterLock spire point loaded to around 2,500 fps(too hot for a Krag action). Doesn't shoot lighter bullets well.

cabelas did a run of No. 1's in 30-40's and if you look quick, lipsey has them right now without the fancy stock and high polish..

Winchester is chambering their 1885 in .30-40 and there is a Handi Rifle in .30-40 on Gunbroker. It's reasonable and comes with a bunch of extras. I love the cartridge. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=282751439

I have a #1 with a 28" PacNor .30-40 barrel and an original Winchester 1885 Hiwall with a 30" round original #3 .30-40 barrel. They are all you need for continental US big game except big bears. The modern bullets make them even more deadly than they originally were. I use .308 WCF loads in the Ruger and get .75 in 3-shot groups all the time. Can't shoot the Win nearly as well now because I need a scope and it is too nice to alter.
Hard to go wrong with a .30-40, and you can get an excellent Hiwall replica from C.Sharps in Montana. Not cheap but worth every penny.

Quite a few guys on the GBO forum reamed their .30-30 Handis to .30-40 with good results. I'm planning to get another .30-30 and do it. 4D Reamer Rentals has the reamer.

Very nice! My Circassian #1's don't look like that.
There is no accounting for taste.
Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.
Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however, Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

The folks who were quick to the draw on the cabelas guns had a great selection of wood to choose from online. Looks like you did great in that department!!
I waited several months before purchasing mine. I watched week after week as the rifles with the best wood disappeared rapidly. I didn't do too bad on mine, but it pales in comparison to yours.

So what powders work best with heavy loads in the .30-40?

Good choice. I'm such a "purdy wood" whore. I am lusting after this one. Drool..............
