Reelman, I had a HELL of a time finding bases for this rifle! The standard bases for the pre-64's would not work for it. I ended up using Talley steel bases for the Winchester Model 70 (.435" rear measurement and .865" fronts) Pre 64 Long Action Magnum (Double Extended Front) - 25XX704 - and 1" Screw Lock Detachable Rings in Low / Matte - M200003. Here's the thread from 2010. Eric

Then it sounds like it does have the clip slot. I have a couple sets of bases for those actions for the old Kimber rings (along with some sets of rings) that I have no use for at the moment but knowing how hard they are to find I'm not anxious to get rid of them.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I also have to give a big kudos to Talley!

Here's my Super Grade .243 with Griffin & Howe side mount, which I bought from G&H when they had a showroom on 44th Street in New York City. The scope is a 4X fixed power Leupold. It has seen very little use and will soon be looking for a new home, since old age and infirmity have curtailed my hunting and shooting activity.

Got the second twin reassembled tonite. Top one, Pre'64 Model 70 Fwt in 243 from 1958. Had a super talented guy refinish the stock , he applied 19 coats of Tung Oil and sharpened up the checkering....looks amazing. Lower rifle is my '59 Fwt 30-06 that I've had for a couple years now. Both are wearing gloss 2.5-8X Leupolds in matching mounts. I'm tempted to ask him to do the 30-06, but it's original and not in bad shape.

Not as fancy as some here, but I am definitely looking forward to taking it out hunting. I may just go try to take a coyote with it today. My 1st M70: 1971 M70 Mannlicher, .30-06 Springfield Talley Lightweight Ring-Base Set Weaver 1-3x

Frank,
What's the story on the mule deer? Looks like a Mexico buck Actually the 3 deer you see all came from Sonora ol' Mexico- the 2 mule deer and the Coues on the bottom. The 2 shown I shot back to back with one of my Weaver Pre 64 28" & 26". I shot a third one the following year (same rifle)- a nice 7 x 5.

18.5". I've only shot a box through it but it does pretty good. Going to work up some loads with a faster burning powder in order to try to get more complete ignition.

Kinda funny story on this one. A friend bought it at a gunshow I was working a few years ago. Brought it over and was so excited about it. I asked him,"why would you want that gaudy thing?" After handling it a few times, I couldnt believe how well it fit me, and the lightness of it! Long story short, its mine now. Its a 70 fw in 270, 1954. Mounted a Leupold compact 3x9 on. Have not shot it yet, but I think / hope it will shoot fine!

A few weeks ago, I asked for help from the Campfire members to find a good Model 70 in 300 H&H. I advertised in the classified as a WTB. Well, I had a few offers from the members who owned 300 H&Hs, but didn't see anything that that really excited me. I had several members refer me to Perry County Fireams in Central PA, and I gave them a call. They actually had several to pick from and I chose a 1955 with a raised comb and in 95 to 97% condition. I also had a member offer a couple of boxes period W-W 180 gr Silvertip Ammo that I accepted. Thanks to all that contributed. Have a look. donsm70
