In the event that you do not sell me that Data 2200 powder, 22.0 grains behind a 50 gr Moly'ed TNT, COL of 2.22.

How easy is THAT to remeber! 222 caliber, 22 grains, Data 2200 powder and 2.22 OAL! It works wonderfully in my rifle.

1 in 14 works well for me also using the 40gr NBT. It will not stabilize the 50gr tsx tho. Tried it out of curiosity, results were not good.

Will the 12 twist stabilize TSXs? I might want to shoot them.

If the TSX is your preferred bullet then the 1&12 should work fine

Tackdriver22250: I in fact own a pair of Remington 700 Classics in caliber 222 Remington - the first one I bought shot so well I bought another one a few years later!
The first Classic 222 I bought has a Lyman 10power scope on it and is all factory stock except for my torquing the action screws and doing a trigger job on it.
It has shot a number of groups in the 4's (5 shots at 100 yards) and its best ever group (5 shots at 100 yards) measured .373".
It consistently shoots in the 5's and 6's even on average condition days.
The next Classic 222 I bought is also factory stock and has a Weaver V-16 (4 to 16) variable scope on it.
Including all load development groups its lifetime average grouping (5 shots at 100 yards) measures only .566"!
Again that average includes all load development group sizes.
I also have a Remington 700 Classic in 223 Remington that shoots just as well as these two 222's.
I am VERY happy with the quality of Remington barrels myself.
I recommend that when you gear up to build yourself a 222 that you seek out a Remington 700 Classic in 222 Remington and give it a try.
I know two other people that have also been impressed with their Classic 222's.
I am not sure if the cost of a custom barrel and the custom smithing that is needed would be worth any "improvement" in accuracy that may or may not be realized?
Best of luck if you go for it.

While accurate, they always seem to be the worst fouling barrels I've ever seen.

With the big 224's I agree. On the triple deuce, 1 in 14 works great UNLESS one wants to shoot TSX or TTSX's.

My good freind Owen Frost has a newer edition Sako with a 1 in 12 twist and it stabilizes 50gr TSX's quite nicely. That said, if one is wanting to build a deer rifle and or a rifle to shoot TSX bullets in one should start with a faster twist barrel AND a higher case capacity cartridge overall. The 222 was not intended as a deer round as there are many better choices in the 224 world beggining with the 223. Where is shines and does great work is with lighter bullets in sedate twisted barrels pointed at varmints of Coyote size and down. For this duty, and at moderate range, there are fe if any better. Think of it as a hot or improved 22 Hornet with a more modern rimless case and much greater inherent accuracy rather than as a short 223 and you would be on the right track.

Yep.

People are most afraid of the things they know little, if nothing about, and nothing has saddled progress in the .224 bore more than "twist reluctance".

My late gunsmith was an ardent BR competitor who tried to talk every build into traditional "accuracy" twists, because he knew what to do and knew the results.

He became real interested in more steep as "neophytes" brought him paper with tiny holes....

I'll guarantee that a steeper twist isn't like dangling your sack on the trigger of a 110 like many seem to make it out to be.....

You should look into a .204 Ruger as well. Savage and Howa make some nice models. Fast and accurate. 50 rounds of Fiocchi Vmax factory ammo is about $30.

Jericho: According to my 2,012 catalog Remington does not offer any of their many models of the 700 in 222 Remington.
And that is a shame.

Tackdriver22250: I see.
I had not noticed that myself - at least to the detriment of accuracy overly early in a string of shots.
I will tell you this I own a primitive bore scope device and my close friend here in town owns an expensive Hawkeye Borescope and when inspecting even new and unfired factory barrels with this tool it is often shocking to see up close the "quality" of the inner barrel surfaces finish!
I tend to clean my centerfire Varminters after relatively short strings of fire (25 to 50 rounds) and I don't notice accuracy fall off much at all.
I am able to notice the difference in copper removal "ease", between factory barrels and custom barrels though - still I seldom notice accuracy diminishment due to "fouled barrels".

HEY! I resemble that remark! WOOF!!! I mean, um, er... I am gonna quite feeding your mule deer buck just for THAT snide remark.... smile

I have 1 in 9 twist barrels in 224 and .243 as well, just not on my small case moderate velocity gopher guns. Out to 300 yards ( a long shot for what amounts to a furry pencil) the 36-50grain explosive bullets are wonderful.

You can still get the CZ527 in .222, they are still in production, just gotta catch them when CZ-USA got a "run" into stock. FINE little rifles they are, too.
