Buddy and I are bourbon drinkers and every two weeks one of us buys a bottle under $30 (we have a list) and gives the other a taste out of a baby food jar. My turn tonight so picked up a bottle of Eagle Rare 10yr single barrel. Myself, not impressed past after the nose which is REALLY oaky (no label reading), but a real bad after taste. The best so far in this price range far has been Devils Cut (Beam). Anybody else experimented in this price range?

Find some Wild Turkey 101 Rye. Yes, I know Rye isn't Bourbon.

+1 on Buffalo Trace, toured the brewery while in Kentucky deer hunting last fall. Enjoyed the tasting after the tour.

If you live in one of the few places where they sell it, the Old Fitzgerald 1894 is the best of the best.

I got a couple bottles of Booker's for $17.50 each when one of the local shops cleared it's inventory before moving to a new building...

Bulleit for under $30. Buffalo Trace and Woodfords or good too, but are well over $30 here. I really like Knob Creek too.

Gotta try Woodford sometime, seen it on the shelves. Meantime, I'm on a marsala, sherry, port binge.

I happened on a smooth, 90 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey a good many years ago that claims to be a "Real Sippin' Whiskey" and has 7 generations of whiskey makers in it's history. It's name is " Ezra Brooks" and I don't know if it was named after it's original maker, but if it was, the man knew how to make truly smooth, tasty bourbon whiskey. The label claims it's made in "Kentucky's Finest Little Distillery", so it may not be available nationally which would be a darned shame since it certainly qualifies as a "real sippin' whiskey"! Oh, yeah... the label also sez the straight bourbon whiskey inside the bottle is "charcoal filtered". I dunno if that is a good thing or not, but the whiskey sure is tasty? Strength & Honor... Ron T.

I guess I'll be the lone guy...I don't care for Buffalo Trace. Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek are great. Well over $30 in my neck of the woods. 1792 isn't a bad bourbon for under $30 Dan

Im a professional brewer that has been brewing for 16 years, now that I got the ego part of the equation out of the way I want to way in on a couple of points. First their is a really good cook book that is now out that everyone that enjoys bourbon should get. "The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook" by Albert W. A. Schmid. Now to respond to the price point. We will do a bourbon and brewers dinner at the brewery many times throughout the year and I need to pick the bourbons or whiskeys at a certain price point. As you can imagine my chef and I have to do a lot or research and development, I say that with a huge smile, to make such an event a success. There is a big difference in the price point of a good bourbon. I have spent some time with the master distiller at Woodford and love to use their product. They carry all four of the major flavors in a very nice balance with just a smudge more rye to finish with a nice spice. So I do like to use woodford, but we tend to ladder the the pairings so I always need to have a lighter one to start with. One of my favorites is a blend that is a little more than $30, depending on where you live, is Basil Hayden. Its how I like to start my evening off when I walk through the door or when my bartender gives me one when I come out of the brewery. The next one I want to recommend is one that I can not believe that I like or ever would say anything about, but for the price point and what it has done in the past with medals is Gentleman Jack. But the one that I wanted to tell you about is a distiller that has the industry talking. Finger Lakes Distilling Company "McKenzie" Rye Whiskey (750ml). He takes his bourbon or rye and ages in a sherry barrel, a oak barrel, and a wine barrel to get what he calls the perfect balance. You can buy it online at https://www.drinkupny.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=S0982
