Does anyone here use purchased bullets?
I have just gotten my first BPCR (40-65) and have read that purchased quality bullets are few and far in between

Hair, there are some good commercial bullets out there but a couple of problems come up. One is the cost, most of the good ones are going to run $12 or $14 per 50. Second, is the dimensions of these bullets may not be optimal for your rifle. Eventually, to wring best accuracy out of a good BPCR most of us have a custom mould built and cast our own.

Try Buffalo Arms, they have everything for the BPCR. Just tell them to send you one of everything. Its quicker than calling back every few weeks.

That rifle you just bought is the cheapest part of the sport.

Take care and welcome aboard,

SS

No words of mine can hope to convey to you the ringing joy and hope embodied in that spontaneous yell: The Americans are coming; at last they are coming!

I hadnt the heart to disillusion them.

Hairtrigger,

You didn't mention the type of rifle and who's the manufacture?

Your next series of questions will be, what powder brand to use, best granulation, how about wads, as in type, thickness maybe even there diameter. How about cases? Do you need to use a case? Now don't forget primers. after all that we'll need to talk about that age old question,"Powder Compression", to compress or not to compress, that is the question. Now on compression expect to read pages and pages of trial and trubulations. Compression will get so boring we all will hear you snore after awhile. I'm joking on some stuff, you can figure out on what

And there you have it in a nut shell.

Hairtrigger you might want to check out Montana Bullet Works in Billings. they have a pretty good selection of 40 cal bullets at a decent price and for a dollar per 50 will size and lube for you. But being able to shoot much almost requires you pour your own unless you have a huge bank account.

the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

I have been doing my share of reading.
I planned on a bunch of trial and error with powders and compression.
The rifle was purchased from another member, It is a Browning, I have been a big Browning fan for quite awhile.
I have no idea if there are BPCR matches even close to me

I also failed to mention the rifle came with a mould but I have no knowledge of melting lead

For starters:
HOT lead, OUCH!! NEVER get 'sloppy' or allow even a drop of water near the pot

Good starting point for a .40-65 With BP it is usually a good idea to leave NO SPACE 'tween the bullet and the blackpowder column (will vary with bullet and throat) ...keep this in mind when 'crafting' your ammunition...

Buffalo Arms Give these folks a call and ask for 'Skip' or 'Cody'; tell 'em Joe sent you and, "said they would treat you right"...
