I live in AZ where a lot of our time is spent sitting on a water hole during the prime times of hunting. As backpack hunter, my plan has always been to camp 1 mile away from prime water. But as you know when you are on them you try to stay with them. Any way I was thinking this morning, why don't I just keep my pack and gear with me and stay at the watering hole. I know its all about the nose and wind direction, but any thoughts? I would just zip out of my bivy and be there. No noise or disturbance of the forest.

Chances are many animals you don't intend to hunt depend on that water, and will avoid it if you are there.
Give them a break.

Never camp in the middle of prime hunting areas, or they will not be a prime hunting areas anymore. Put as little pressure on those areas as possible. Animals, particularly elk have a very good sixth sense also, plus your sent will keep them away or change their patterns.

Unlawful camping
It is unlawful for a person to camp within one-fourth mile
of a natural water hole containing water or a man-made
watering facility containing water in such a place that
wildlife or domestic stock will be denied access to the only
reasonably available water.

Only a dingleberry, not yet a Turdlike person, maybe someday!!!

A mile is a long way; right on it is too close. Perhaps split the difference. If rifle, maybe there's a vantage point where you can sleep and still see primary access trails to the water. If bow, you gotta walk a bit ... If I had a hotspot I would not want to sleep too close unless I could utterly predict the wind by virtue of a deep wash or canyon or something like that.

It's just polite to allow animals access to water.
Don't camp on the water.

Might work if all you want to do is watch the water.

The verdict is................bad idea.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

We've actually had instances of folks tarping over water sources to force big game to their favorite hunting stand. Also seen guzzlers that were posted as being occupied by a party from the beginning to the end of archery season.

Not a problem during rifle seasons as we have more water and snow available.

Yes, camping near water in arid regions is discouraged here in Oregon.

Beat me to it.
Against the law here in Az, and will garner you a ticket if caught.

Also you do not own the water even if you camp on it which would be the only reason to do so people camp right next to them all the time here in az all they do is ruin hunting there for everybody including them selves sore subject with me and should not be done
