My dad had this sign hanging in the back shed where he kept his fish poles;

God give me grace to catch a fish
So big that even I
When telling of it afterwords
May never need to lie.

I work on a Crane Repair crew in the steel industry. Our Electrician is a funny old bugger, after we fix a crane he tells the Operator,

"It's gauranteed for 20 years, or the first time you use it, which ever comes first"

Thought I caught a deformed fish this morning but it was fine. When I got it on the bank and walked around to the other side, it did have both eyes.

Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

Brother Keith, A fellow learns something new most everyday. All these years me fishin', and not knowing the auger eating fish were so common. So, do you savvy Canucks ever land them later? Do any still have the auger inside? Ever find more than one auger? Ever clean one with the engine still running? What do you do with the augers? Paint them up, and sell them to gulible Yanks on garage sales? Are the augers like spinners in that some colors attract the fish better? Say red better than black, or yellow, depending on light conditions? I have so much to learn. Thanks again!

They seem to hit best if you clean the ice out of the hole and then idle them half throttle. Gradually pull the auger out and they will often follow it out of the hole. I've lost a few cutting edges by pulling the auger out to fast. Once you get it down pat an auger will last years. I have never had as good a luck with axes or ice picks.

Randy, I thank you ever so kindy for the advise. It does sound however that you are gunning for the smaller type. Unless that is, your auger is much larger than the one I lost in such a frightning manner. Mine was a meager 8 inches. Yours must be at least two feet wide? Any color, or pitch, meaning left, or right hand flighting preferance? Thanks so! I just don't know how I got along before I meet you kind brothers.

I always anchor my auger to the snow mobile with 3/8" rope, so when the fish starts to take her down, ya fire up the snow machine and pull the fish out'n the hole. Auger colour depends on water colour mostly. Wabigoon Lake fish like a shiny silver auger because in the muddy water, they show up better.

Another thing I have found is if they don't bite on the auger, dynamite is the next best lure -- called CIL wobblers.

Most intriguing. I think I am starting to get an inkling as to this wrinkle on the sport. I can't recall seeing the wobblers at the local bait shop. Maybe I'll bring some up from the States next trip. Do they ask about them at customs? The auger fishing does look like a more pure form of angling however. I gather from your use of the 3/8 line that my best spots are still safe.3/4" aircraft cable for me. The buddy system would be the way to go with this sport. Some one to share the two man bucking saw whist filleting the slabs. More to the point, the lake ice is long gone for the year. Boat fishing is coming soon. We should share some open water tips with our good campfire pals!

The last time I was ice fishing on Ontario's famous Secret Lake I hooked the legendary lake trout known to locals as old MossBack. The fight went on for about three lours before he straightened out the hook and went his way.
When I crawled out of the fishshack I realized old MossBack had pulled the hut all the way down the lake.

The last lake trout I caught came from such deep water, I had to scrape the frost off his back to tell what kind of fish it was. This was in July!

BillR, That is a classic! The famous "Secret Lake" is still secret to me? The best yarns start being semi believable, then zap you at the end. Do you have any more? Brother Keith, Good one! I bring out the worst in all you otherwise honest folks.

Many years ago when I was ten I spent most of the summer holidays at my Uncle Pauls in Petawawa, Ontario. It was a great summer spent swimming, fishing and watching the helicopters from the military base fly along the Petawawa River.
Most memorable was my chance encounter with a new and unusual friend. One day while fishing a huge shadow swam slowly by just feet from where I was standing on a huge rock. Even at my young age I knew this was a once in a lifetime muskie. Catching him became my summers obsession.
Every lure and bait known to a young fisherman was placed in front of that darn muskie!
It was as if they were invisible which caused my frustration to boil many times. One day while munching my favourite meal, a peanut butter sandwich the muskie circled my bobber a dozen times then swam slowly away. I screamed Stupid fish and threw my half eaten peanut butter sandwich into the river.
Immediately the muskie devoured the sandwich right before my eyes! Our friendship grew and each day he would wait patiently beside a submerged log waiting for lunch. He tried jam, cheese, balonga and even sardine sandwiches . but peanut butter was definitely his favourite.
Over the next month we became great friends, swimming together and sharing sandwiches almost every day. As summer closed I was horrified to find out my cousin had shared my secret with the overweight stranger who watched us closely on many occasions. He too had dreams of a large muskie .. mounted on his office wall!!!!!!
My final trip to the river was a sad one. This muskie was going to be caught and my uncle had told me there was simply nothing I could do so I should catch it myself.
Tears rolled down my face as I unwrapped that last peanut butter sandwich. How could I treat a very special friend this way.
The sandwich hit the water with a splash and was devoured instantly as always. This time it was different, something was very wrong and the muskie streaked across the surface with a mouth full of pain. He thrashed, rolled and leaped high into the air but the pain only became worse.
You can imagine the rest on your own.
I never landed this very special muskie. In fact I never saw him again. Many others tried but he had learned never to trust anything thrown into the water by the humans standing on shore. To the best of my knowledge he was never caught and likely died of old age.
It still hurts to think about what I had done. I had betrayed a friend who would never understand why. I have never really forgiven myself.
I think about my muskie friend often, in fact I still have the bottle I had taken from my Aunt Gerts pantry that August morning. The label clearly identified the contents which I had stuffed into that final sandwich.
