He reminds me of me, just not quite as literate, seasoned, or good looking. He might want to consider getting sunglasses and a GTO...

I like Ken a great deal and appreciate the fact that he is willing to share what he knows with us at 24HCF.

And the man can speell. I mean spell.

I taught Dr. Howell everything he knows.

I have the upmost respect for him.

He is the epitome of a classic and classy gentleman !

That doesn't involve patience at all. Patience is an inward-looking thing, and I'm the only one now whom I'm responsible for. Yes, there are things on the 'fire that disgust me and disappoint me, but they have nothing to do with patience, and others' misspelling isn't one of 'em.

I've always been impatient with myself � from playing the guitar to climbing a mountain, I've always had to get to the top nonstop. Always wanted to write but had no "gift" for it. Wrote well as a youngster, by unconscious emulation � then got into forestry school and unconsciously emulated Foundations of Silviculture, Toumey's abominable "translation" of Korstian's German text. As a result, I wrote so abominably that I couldn't make sense of what I'd written.

Learning how to write persists to be a constantly frustrating and tedious ordeal, but I'm determined to keep at it until I get it right. I can't imagine that my writing will ever make me (or anybody else!) cry, but it sho' do make me cuss now 'n' then!

When I occasionally offer a spelling or word-choice correction on-line, I do so as a helpful "older brother," not as "Miss Mossybottom," the third-grade teacher. Nobody owes me correct spelling.

He seems to have been involved in more close calls/attacks with toothy clawed critters than a lot of people. I know that much.

The original was obviously my mistake followed up by a humorous attempt of my spell checker to get me into more trouble than normal. But is was so funny I left it once it was pointed out in a following post.

Your correct spelling and grammar is a goal for me and I do not that offense when the good people here correct me.

I love to write and often do so just for the joy of telling the story to myself. There have been times when a story has been buzzing around my head and I end up having to sit down and write it just to find out how it ends. But most of my writing is fiction and I find fiction much more enjoyable to write even when I have to spend more time in recherch� that I spend actual writing. My writing will never make anyone cry but my spelling and grammar might.

I'm not all that persuaded that runny eyes and a lumpy throat are what a good writer should aspire to.

Dr. Charley Sharps of Coos Bay once told me he did his best to wright so that the reader felt he was standing beside the author and that anytime you write so that the reader realizes he is reading you have failed him. Then he told me I had written several pieces that accomplished those goals better that he had ever done.

Sometimes I get lucky and put it together.

The purpose of fiction is to give the reader an experience � as if he were there, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching what you're giving him to see, to hear, to smell, to taste, to touch. The experience may make him cry, but your writing shouldn't. Whenever the manner of your writing draws his attention away from the matter that you're writing about, you've pulled him out of the experience.

Exactly. It is always my goal, sometime I get lucky.

If Dr. Howell is pretentious, which I do NOT think he is, at this point, he has certainly EARNED the right to be.

God bless Dr. Howell. I consider him a true renaisance (sic) man of great wisdom and experience. He is one of the most erudite individuals I have ever come across and I have met a few in my years of college and the professional world.
My only regret is that I did not have the great pleasure of meeting him when he was a younger man. Unfortunately, I do not foresee an opportunity to do so now. I would give anything to get to the Campfire gettogether and meet him in person.
