Came late to the show... so what in your opinion is the best set up for a 280AI, and what bullet/powder combination is ideal for hunting all manner of critters near and far in the lower 48?
Should i even consider having a local smith work the magic on a 700 CDL, or go the assemble components route?
Thanks in advance...

At least 24" lighter contour barrel. Magpro and the 162gr Amax are your huckleberry. RL-22 works well too. Expect 3000fps with the Magpro Amax combo out of a 24" tube.
Nosler 280AI brass is easy and the prep work has all been done.

The 280AI is EASILY the best Ackley on the basic .30-06 case.
When SAAMI legitimized it at 65,000psi that made all the difference.
Bob will roll his eyes but my .280AI meet or beat published loads for the 7RM. Impressive to say the least.

I'll take the BC of the best 7mm bullets over that of the 6.5mm bullets. The slightly longer case as well.
That said my next barrel order will be a #1 contour 6.5mm Benchmark. Likely chamber if for the 6.5-06AI or possibly the 6.5 Gibbs.

Just imagine if Bob had a 280 Ackley on a pre-64 action. Just the action alone should add 100 fps, minus blue tape naturally.

Get a.280 rem with a 24 inch tube and a box of 140gr Federal Accubonds or TSX and you will have no need to go AI. No knock on the .280AI which I like very well but I have a .280 rem in Wheatherby with the 24 inch tube and the above mentioned Federal factory loads the ballistics are very similar

The 280 part means it's some sorta furrin metric thing, given an Amurican numerical connotation to entice the bored or unwary.
As always, the AI part translates to Affectation Implicit.....

The .280 Rem was emasculated right from the start by Remington and SAAMI has kept it that way ever since. Hell, I can drive 162's as fast as that 140 factory load, both out of 24" barrels.
