Replaced the J-lock on a short action M700 with the Gre-Tan assembly. I like it, but now the bolt is difficult to close at the last little bit ( just as the lugs are engaging).

Whassup with that?!

Main spring might be a bit too long, try taking 1 coil off.

Had the exact same thing happen when I installed one on my 700 KS.

I concluded that the timing on the threads of the shroud was wrong. Since mine was a LH action, as I rotated the bolt handle down the threads drew the shroud into the rear of the bolt body creating resistance to closing. I returned the shroud to Brownells but sold the rifle before I could install the new one.
Since you have a RH action you clearly don't have this problem so you're just plain screwed!

I have bought 2 of them --- a very nice upgrade from the factory remington assembly. Both of mine smoothed out in no time at all from a little use and both rifles shot nicely.

Yes. I like that. The J-lock spring is an abomination.

Let's see if I can explain it better. It feels like the lugs have a corner that has to break over before it'll close... once I'm past that-- IE, once the bolt handle has started to drop-- it's fine. Feels normal. It's just hard go get the lug engagement started.

If you hold down the trigger and the bolt closes smoothly, it's a sear-timing issue where the bolt is being stopped from traveling far enough forward by that engagement. If so, you would need remove some of the material from your new firing pin to allow it to go a smidge further before contacting your trigger.

I'd call Greg and see what he has to say. I have found him to be a gentleman the few times I've talked to him.

That sounds like the problem to me since your rifle is RH'd.
I had the Gre-Tan spring and pin in my LH for a long time before I put the GT shroud on it.

I've had a few of the Gre-Tan drop in assemblies that would not install correctly...

I returned them and got replacements... Some worked and some didn't...

I opted to go with the PT&G stuff...

What ever you do don't send the Firing Pin assembly and Bolt to Gre-Tan to diagnose the problem... Unless you want your Bolt [bleep] up...

Just sayin'...

Had a similar situation with a 700 LA. I had ordered (2) of the Gretan's, and both of them did the same thing you are describing. I check for burrs/sharp edges, cleaned everything, etc with the minimal change to the fit. I ended up sending them back.

I bought one directly from Gre-Tan for my Ti 308. It also did not screw in quite far enough. I sent it back to him along with my bolt and in turn received a [bleep] up bolt. Gun the PTG and have no worries...

I sent one to Greg. He installed the pin and shroud and bushed the firing pin hole. Model perfecto in my experience.

Interesting. I guess I should have researched this better. I thought the Gre-Tan were "good stuff". Dang it.

I did the test mentioned above. Holding the trigger down, it closes easily.

I was starting to think no one else picked up on this.
