On my road trip this past week-end, saw three Model 23 Winchesters for sale. To say the least, the prices being asked was staggering. What is going on with this market, or are these dealers on drugs?

OK, hows about a 20 gauge, 25-1/2" bbls, with the screw-in extended chokes, Pigeon grade, semi-pistol grip, black rubber pad, used, but pretty nice, not sure if it had the case or what, but for $4599!!!!!!! Sheesh! Should I have jumped on it?

I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

Well the barrels alone make it a "no go" for me. I would say that is steep either way.

Actually, no, this store doesn't think it is a 21. They had a 21 right below it. Any 21 that cheap has to be a real POS. IMHO.

Well, I did pick up a similar 12 gauge for $1999. Which I thought was overpriced, but I thought I would like another 23, to replace the three I once had, but stupidly sold. I don't like short barrels either, but the 23's are heavy enough that I think I can deal with it.

$2000 to $2500 are reasonable ranges for 23s, maybe less, maybe more depending on condition, gauge and wood quality. You might want to check out 201s before you spend money on a 23 or even more on a 21.
