Anyone heard when Ruger will introduce the 77 in 17 Hornet???
Have a chance to pick up a used Ruger 22 Hornet, but would rather have a factory rifle without the expense of re-barreling.
Thanks!
Virgil B.

Actually, the .17 centerfires have been doing OK the past few years, partly because of the success of the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire. But demand is enough that more bullet companies are making .17 caliber bullets for handloading. Just a few years ago Hornady was the only major bullet maker doing .17's, and now there's also Berger and Nosler. I wouldn't be totally surprised to see another company join them in the next year or two. As a result even the original .17 Remington is making a comeback here and there, and there are quite a few fans of the .17 Fireball.
The .17's are specialized varmint rounds, so never will be universal like the .223 or .22-250, chambered constantly in any company's line. But there's enough demand that special runs will be made now and then, much like special runs are made of other rounds such as the 6mm Remington, .257 Roberts, 7x57 Mauser and .358 Winchester.

#1 SIL is trying to establish a bird shooting ranch. Part of the process is to thin out the predators. He is very scccessfully using a .17 Remington on baited and called coyotes at night. Shots are usually 100 or less and the little .17 melts coyotes (and works on coons also.) jack

Deal fell through on my used Hornet purchase.
But, I NEED a 17 Hornet. Gotta wait 'till Ruger brings one out on the 77. (kicks toe in dirt!) That will give me more time to save for another Leupold scope anyway. Virgil B.

Well, it's not like the .17's are flying off shelves!
But the rifle market has changed over the past few years, in part thanks to CNC machinery. Manufacturers can make smaller batches of rifles (and probably ammo and brass) without so much time getting eaten up in factory change-over costs. As a result they can make a profit on smaller runs, so don't have to sell 25,000 rifles in a given chambering each year to make a profit.
This is also the reason distributors like Lipsey's can offer small runs of what would have once been special-order items, whether Ruger No. 1's in 6.5x55 or Blackhawks in .44 Special.
As a result the definition of "commercial success" for both firearms and ammunition has changed.

Isnt Savage making 17 Hornets also? I see 17HMRs everywhere, but only see 17 Rems every blue moon.
