So the scope that came with my Model 99F in 300 was a cheap Japanese knock off from the mid-50's. It won't hold it's sighting and is costing me $$ on ammunition.

I'm stuck buying in Canada, which appears to be a big downside, since Leupold prices are about $100 more than in the US (I've NEVER seen this Free Trade thing work for consumers!) Anyway, I need a new scope and I want to keep the price down in the $200 range if possible (before taxes, shipping, rings, etc). I thought I had bought a 3-9x40 Leupold from Wholesalesports, but apparently their website lied and they didn't have it in stock (for 209.99 it was perfect for me). They appear (on their web site) to have 2-7x33 in stock - would this suffice for hunting bear, deer and possibly moose? I doubt I'll ever take a shot beyond 200 yards. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as I'm very new to all this shooting and hunting stuff. Other options I've looked at are Bushnells (Banner Dusk & Dawn, Trophy XLT) Nikon (Prostaff, Prostaff II).

In my opinion a 2x7 is just about perfect for what you want to do. Don't know anything about buying anything in Canada, but maybe one of the new redfield revolutions might be an option.

If it's marketed right, you'll buy it

Sounds like a perfect place for a fixed 2 3/4x of 4x.

I am using a Leupold vx-II 2-7x33 on my model 99 300 and it seems to be a good fit!

For under 200 bucks, a new Weaver K4 seems like a good option to me. They are durable and have very good optics. In the US you can get them for about $150.00 new...don't know what the cost would be up north.

...............Any good quality 1" tubed 2-7x33 or less magnification at a price point of say between $150 to $225 will work very well. With hunting shots not exceeding for the most part (as you say) 200 yards, there is no viable reason for any greater a magnification than 2x7 unless you feel for some reason you really need it.

A 2x7 is an excellent all around hunting magnification even out to 400 yards. A 2x7 or less magnification won`t overscope a 300 Savage whereas going higher does imo.

What are the prices like for the 2-7x33 Redfield Revolutions in Canada? Great scope for the money. I have a 3-9x40 Revolution.

Other alternatives;

1-3x20 Weaver V3
2-7x32 Weaver V3

Redfield Revolution 2-7x33 is $199.00 as is the Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 (of course both of those are prices at the place that didn't have the 3-9x40 vx1 in stock after I'd ordered it on their site!) Thanks for the information.

I have a Leupold 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex on my 99F in 260 and think that it is an excellent scope for that rifle/cartridge combination. Leupold scope, Warne rings, and Weaver bases work for me.

i have an old B&l 4000 in 1.6-6X36...

and yes it s a shame for Leupold and especially if you get the export license they wont even fix it for free on the Canadian side .... if you buy on the US side.

I have a Fixed power Weaver K2.5 on my 99F in 300 Savage. It has been perfect for my deer hunting needs in Michigan. I can shoot 1" groups at 100 meters and it gives enough magnification, a wide field of view and great low light ability in early morning and late afternoon. Don't over power the scope for actual hunting with this typical woods gun. Also this scope is rugged as all get out.

I have an old steel tube Weaver K4 with post and crosshair on my 99F 300. It seems like a great fit for the rifle. The finish of the scope matches the gun, looks like the right vintage for the rifle and the reticle is very easy to see in the dark woods, yet precise enough for distance shooting.

A Weaver K4 or K6 can be had for $200 here in Canada. That's what I'd get.

I have a 4x Leupold on my .300, a M700 Classic. Seems to fill the bill.

A classic rifle in a classic cartridge like the 300 Savage cries for a straight-tube scope like a Leupold 1.5-5 or 1-4 with a heavy duplex if you like a variable or one of the low-end fixed powers as suggested above by 300 Savage.

Clean used M-8 4X Leupold, or forget the scope and run old Redfield 70 or 80 series peep sights.

That's what i have on a pre-mil F and an old takedown G, both in 300 Savage.
