Shoot it, but with a standard 16.5 lb recoil spring. 17 lb probably wouldn't hurt.
IIRC the military used corrosive primers until 1953. If the ammo reads 53 or less on the case head stamps, then yes clean as described previously, immediately after shooting. Since GC slides are lightened I would use a min 17 and would really be most comfortable with an 18lb spring. The wadcutter stuff may be light so if the slide shortstrokes then while shooting that ammo just use the LW spring (should be 12Lb). Outside of that none of that makes me nervous at all. Just do a good cleaning incase some of the USGI stuff has corrossive primers. Better safe than sorry, and its not much work.

Has anyone ever chronographed any .45ACP military ball from various times? The reason I'm asking is that I was under the assumption that all .45 ACP ball ran at 800-850 fps. Does anyone know what the specs for WW1 and WW2 and later 1950's-1960's ammo is ? Tanks.

Dave:
Haven't had any genuine military ball since I got my chronograph, but Cartridges Of The World, 9th Edition, says 855 fps.
I have come across that figure elsewhere, but no longer recall where.

Thanks tjm. I don't think that our military specced a " hotter " version of military ball for subgun use. I believe the Germans did in WW2 for their 9 mil but not us with the .45.
At one time the Thompson subgun was chambered for a hotter .45 cartridge......45 Thompson Long, I think, but the depression put the cabosh on any new developments.
