My son's income tax check just came in. He wants to buy a scope for his 06. He wants a leupold 4.5x14 but doesn't have that much money (325.00) I gentleman at the range sugested a weaver 6 x 24. The rifle is a custom Rem. 700 with a custom heavy barrel, and custom trigger. The stock is an "ultimate Sniper" stock. What's your opinion Weaver, Leupold Burris Tasco???
I would rate your choices like this;

1. Leupold----Excellent choice, good optics, warranty for life. Worth the extra money spent on them. Large target knobs and 1/4 Min clicks
2. Weaver----Optics are very good & would be my second choice.
3. Burris------ Good scope but not as good as Leupold.

4. Tasco---Optics are decent but the whole weak system leaves alot to be desired. I hear the company folded and that means no warranty.

I'm no long range expert by any stretch of the imagination but I do shoot and hunt a lot. Last Saturday I spent the day with a long range shooter that really knows his stuff. I was shooting my Remington AWR in 300 Winchester Magnum. It's topped with a Weaver Grand Slam 3x10x40. I used Leupold dual dovetail mounts and Burris Signature dovetail rings. My first three shots were to check zero at 100 yards, then we spun on the elevation turret and I was able to whack steel targets one right after another from 700 to 730 yards. Eventhough this is a hunting-style scope rather than a target or tactical scope it had enough MOA to handle targets out to 700 and beyond no problem with my 300WinMag. I bought the scope from SWFA. They are currently listed at $249.00. If you look around you may be able to beat that price by $10.00 to $15.00 however Chris at SWFA has always met or beat any other price I've found. I highly recommend both the Weaver scope and SWFA to do your business with. Here's a link if you want to read up on these scopes a bit.

Leupold scopes are my first choice but I have never looked through a 4.5 X 14 that I liked. There is something different about the eye relief on that scope. I do own and love the 6.5 X 20 for long range and small targets. The Vari x II in 6 X 18 is a good one. Also the 4 X 12 and the 3.5 X 10. I have two of the old 3 X 9 and they have held up very well. I have a Bausch & Lomb 6 X 24 on a prairie dog rifle that is a good scope also, but it would not be my choice on a big game rifle due to it's length. It's a looong one. My next scope purchase is going to be a Leupold 6 X 18 to go on a 7 Mag that I am putting together. I have shot a buddies rifle with that scope on it and I really like it for game larger than varmints.

It sounds like your son's rifle has potental for accuracy. But a rifle will not hit the same point of impact if the scope does not point to the same spot every time. A lesson I learned early in my life with a cheap 4 x scope. I don't care to go into that story [Linked Image] But my advice would be to save a litle more money and get a good scope. I know it's hard to have a new rifle siting around the house and not be able to take it out and shoot it for lack of money for a scope. I had a brand new, in the box rifle that sat in my closet for three mounths waiting until I could scrape up the money for a set of rings and mounts. I know how hard that is. Do you have a rifle you can take the scope from until you can afford the scope you want? Because it sounds like you know you want the Leupold.

Prairie Dog Shooter, You hit the target dead center. The boy will have to save a long time on the money he's making. He just couldn't turn down the deal he got on the rifle. He's a lefty and good bolt actions anen't that easy to come by. I found out where this one came from. The man built this gun then found himself straped for cash. From what our friend says this gun can make one ragged hole at 100 yrds. I tought him to buy the best quality you can afford, I guess he'll have to wait awhile to shoot this one. Maybe I'll pitch in some money for his bithday in a couple months.

If that boy is interested in shooting targets and ethical hunting instead of drugs, then break down and buy him the leupold for his birthday and another spare leupold for christmas. Cheapest investment you could every make, is them young ones going to the woods or the range instead of messing with the drugs and such!
Just my opinion.

Ron,
I have a Leupold 6-18x and a Weaver v24x. Both are fine scopes
for target work but the mag is a bit too high for hunting depending
on your terrain. The Weavers color clairty at 24x is a bit washed out,
but not too bad. Weaver V24 sell for around $289 at the mail
order guys and I wouldn't hesitate getting another one. Art

Bigwad101 is right on ! Everyone of us need to take the time and and take a kid out and give them our time and share basic knowledge. You would be surprised at the postive effect it has on teens. It recently took my best friends 18 yr old son to the range. He had been hanging with the "Gang" and hitting the beer and pot. He said he was bored. When I got him to the range I hand had 1/2 the safe packed with plenty of ammo. We went the through .22 LR , 357, 44 mag, 22-250, 6mm, and 358 Win. The .22 super american and the 700 VS 22-250 stuck. We spent a total of 5 hours shooting asprin tablets and postage stamp size targets at varies ranges. The next day he wanted to hit the reloading bench and learn. He wanted to start out with a practice gun that would shoot cheap. He bought a Marlin 22 and scoped it with his own money. His Dad says he comes home with different brands of 22 ammo and tries them out a couple times a week. Now he wants to challenge the OB-1 that showed him the basics. (Ain't scared)
I guess I see several cases of beer that could have been bought. The new friends he made at the range. The interest and time spent on positive legal activies
Today, 8 months later he is enlisting in the USMC. I'll be at the range this week to show him which way the parade is going (I hope) with the 22 rifle shoot out. His goal is to be a Marine Sharp Shooter.
We should all do this when we can and save the sport and maybe change the direction of maybe one good kid. His Dad said he sleeps a lot better !
Right on Bigwad101 !

I just got a Leu VX111 4.5 X 14 AO Tac and it's eye relief is the same as other scopes and the specifications agree. I shot it today and it's a very clear scope with high resolution. The rifle is an 8.5 lb 7mm WSM and there is plenty of eye relief. The adjustments seemed to be accurate also.

For prices on scopes www.dnrsports.com has much lower prices than swfa for what they carry. They don't have Weavers but carry Leu's, Swaro, Zeiss , Burris etc.
