I need another scope soon. I have a 3.5x10 Leupold on a very accurate custom 7mm Dakota, that I am considering moving to another rifle and replacing with a new scope. New scope will have target turrets for long range(for me that is at around 500 yards, although I have come up with a place to regularly shoot 600 yds, maybe farther--don't laugh, I have to learn to crawl before I learn to walk ). I am considering looking, in addition to Leupold, at Weaver Grand Slam, Nikon Monarch and Sightron S11. Worth looking at? I think Nightforce is probably out of my price range.

To be honest with you.I would buy the Nikon in 6.5-20 power.I have one on one of my 1000 yard bench guns and love it.I also have (Leupolds.8.5-25 LR,6-18).A Weaver Classic 6-24.And a 36 power Sightron on other match guns....The Nikon at least to me is the clearest by far...I just wish they would make a 8-32x50 Monarch

Boyd,
Can you be more specific on which Nikon scope you are referring to? Is it the Monarch UCC 6.5-20 x 44?
thanks, Ross

Boyd, can I assume that the Nikon adjustments have proven to be very repeatable? I have Monarchs on my .358 and my daughters 7-08, but have never messed with long range repeatability with them. Thanks, Al

Boyd, Your recommendation for Nikon on another forum about a year ago, led me to buy the 5.5-16.5 version for my 22-250 Cooper. I have been very happy with that scope so far. I will either get another one of those or maybe one of these bigger ones next. Thanks for the advice.

Boyd,
What kind of reticle do you use for 1000 yard bench rest? David Tubb uses a 3/8 MOA dot for 100 yard prone. Others use a 1/8" dot.

Dixie, I use Ultimate Outdoors. Their price on Nikons is hard to beat. http://www.ultout.com/nikon-optics.htm I think it is around $408.00. I'll get my next one from them also. Boyd shoots the big stuff so I am sure he can tell you if it would hold up to a 300 RUM.

Boyd, I was looking at the 5.5x16.5 and the 6.5x20 at Gander Mountain yesterday. While they both had target adjustments, the 6.5x20's were a lot taller. My concern would be that they might get damaged more easily in a hard case being roughly handled by airline employees. The length of the knobs might cause the windage knob to be pressed up against the side of the case. Why the difference in length? Since I don't see myself shooting beyond 800 yards, at least for a while , would the 5.5x16.5, with its shorter knobs, work about as well?

Hey! Thanks! That IS a good price. Thanks very much.
At that price I may very well get one. If it doesn't work I can blame Mr Heaton! ha ha ha

I was comparing prices on Bear Basin and they have posted on their web site that they will beat any advertised Nikon price by ten dollars. They said they would sell the nikon in question for 398 and honor their word. Sounds like a great deal!

Boyd,
Hee's another question. Could you suggest mounts to use on a Picatinny rail for use from 200 to 1000 yards? Is there sufficient adjustment range within the scope for 200 to 1000 yards. Or would you have to use some sort of tapered affair?

How would it work on a 300rum for whitetail at 1500? IMHO,If you will be shooting out to 1500 yards. You will need more than 20 power.I steal the 8.5-25 LR Leupie off my(my daughters now) heavy bench gun.I will only use the Nikon out to 1000 yards or so..I have had the Nikon on a number of different guns. The scope was on a 6.5 pound unbraked 7stw for a year or so.I was,by far the most violent gun I have ever shot. The scope is still going strong....And will be the scope I put back on my Light bench gun next season
