Are the new MFG 98's from all good for gas escape? Is one of the new MFG better than the other?

If they follow the original 98 design. It is/was among the best.

As I'm not familiar with all of the newly manufactured Mauser variants I can't answer your query by specific maker.

It would seem to me however that the original military designed bolt shroud should shield the shooter's face better from venting gases than the commercial types that I've seen so far.

The thumb cut on the left receiver sidewall on military 98 actions is also an important feature for keeping gas out of the shooter's face. I do not think a commercial action would measure up to a military one in that respect.

No doubt all the little details of the military 98 make differences in how much gas will hit the shooter's face if a case or primer blows. But in my experience, some of the so-called faults of commercial actions (such as the so-called "H-ring" and lack of a thumb-slot in the left receiver wall) are less important than the flanged bolt shroud. This is because I've had a case blow, through the wall just above the solid head, in a commercial FN action and barely felt anything any gas on the left side of my face.

When it comes to gas handling, there are essentially two types of actions; sealers and venters. The Mauser 98 and it's commercial offspring are venters. They are, however, designed to vent in directions which are usually safe to the shooter. I have seen some serious boo-boos in Mauser actioned rifles and though there were parts flying and the rifle was wrecked, the shooters were unharmed; at least physically!
I don't know that any Mauser 98 is noticably better than another. They all vent and they all do it safely (mostly). GD
