The one I like is the Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 with CDS (or without it's your preference), 3-9x40, and another good option is 4.5-14x40.....I have ran all with great success on the 300 wby and other 300 mags...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

It has good ER, great optics, is relatively compact for its power and the CDS is the most simple, straight forward turret, IMHO. It's also the least expensive. DF

hbc01,
That rifle demands something like a Bushnell 6500 2 1/2-16X42. Huge field of view and great top end. The eye relief is definitely adequate for a kicker like a .300 WM.
You're backward to the way I do rifle and scope. I get a scope and then get a rifle that fits. But you will do well with your .300 and a 2 1/2-16X.

I'll give another vote for the Leupy 3.5-10x40. That scope is just a winner, IMO.

It's a great scope, just a lot bigger, bulkier and heavier than the VX-3 3.5-10x40, I have my 6500 on a 7mm RM with Mark V action, Brux barrel and B&C Medalist stock. That gun, all up, is probably 9+#'s. If the .300 Win Mag is a sleek, light weight gun, the VX-3, IMHO, would be the better choice. DF

My Wby MkV .300 Wby. wears a Leupold VX3, 2.5-8 x36, matte scope. I have yet to find it not adequate for anything I want to do with it.
IMO, the Leupold VX3 2.5-8 is arguably the finest all-around scope ever devised for big game hunting.

Mine wears a Leupold VX3 4.5-14 LR.
Can't go wrong with Shrapnel's choice though....a Swarovski Z5 or Z6 would work well.

Swaro PH 3-12 in TDS if you can find it or Schmidt& Bender 3-12 with TDS (you can get the S&B in 40 or 50mm objective) If yo want the magnification go with the 4-16 S&B all are FFP and magnification doesn't matter for drop. That cartridge, 200gr Partitions and those scopes are a perfect combo for 600 yard shooting. Zero at 200 then have a stadia line for 300, 400, 500, and 600.

The problem with the 2.5-16X42 Bushy 6500 is they come with the side focus/parallax setup and a fine reticle. That means the scope's depth of focus will be alot shorter than a scope w/o it, and the reticle may be hard to see in bad light. E

For several years I hunted everything with a M70 Classic Stainless 300 Wby in a custom stock. It wore a Leupold 3.5-10X40 and I couldn't imagine a better scope for that rifle. Moose at 15 yards, other game at long range.
This was way before the CDS was invented, but that would be an obvious upgrade in my eyes.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Just a voice that has not been at the table: I'd put a Leupold 6x36 on it. Seriously, I would, and did.
