HAMILITON, Mont. -- A state wolf specialist in Montana says mountain lions have killed two radio-collared wolves in the Bitterroot Valley since January.
Liz Bradley of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said she found a dead wolf last week with skull puncture wounds that are a trademark of a mountain lion.
She said the lion ate part of the wolf and covered the rest with debris. In January she found another dead wolf west of Lolo with the same wounds.
Bradley said a deer carcass nearby indicates the two predators apparently fought. She said last year she found two other wolves with puncture wounds in their skulls.
She said now only four packs in the Bitterroot Valley have a wolf with a radio collar.

Must have not been a pack member. My understanding it that things go the other way when a pack arrives.

Usually that kind of turmoil is resolved by muscle in numbers.... unless there is a pack or shall I say 'pride' of cougar whistle

Betcha' if one of us "uneducated" hunters would have found a dead woof, made our own necropsy on the carcass such as the biologist did, claimed death by lion we would be poo-pooed.

Good for the lions if thats REALLY what happened.... To many dip-chits pull'n for the woofs that don't know jack about them the damage they cause.

I doubt it...not very hard to recognize a lion kill when you see one. Biologists would be more inclined to believe someone, but my god...the bullchit they are forced to listen to from the barstool biologists. "wolves are eatin' all the elk", "the transplanted wolves are a different species", "SSS" "wolves are a way to take away our guns"...the list goes on and on.

I agree...way too many people dont jack chit about predators, what role they play, etc. etc. etc.

Buzz is right, our Bio's hear some outlandish claims from the bar stool Bio's.

I wish some of this rancor was directed towards the serial poachers in the state-

I read the 'root report about lions leading in the elk mortality. Sure Lions kill elk, given the opportunity and time and place.

Don't change the fact the whole beautiful woof re-introduction idea was stupid as the the day is long, Not to mention illegal.

I guess its O.K if special interest groups 'any one or group that supported woof introduction' and government entities 'USFW' want to introduce an evasive species to an area.

Any body elts would have done such an act would have been sued, fined and raked across 100 miles of white hot coals naked then jailed.

I hope cougars kill 100 more wolves.....that would be a fitting ironic twist.

Glad you brought that up. Without a doubt, one doesn't need a study to see first hand that the 2 legged poachers here are doing a bigger number than predators.

Saw two Grizzlies fight on t.v. yesterday. Though it appeared to me to be a fight to the death, it turned out to be nothing more than a territorial dispute. The hunter shot one of them. He had puncture wounds all over.

I changed channels and came back at the end.. I couldn't watch one bear kill the other.

I can't get mad at the wolves or "lions" which chase down deer and elk to eat and survive.

However, that same "attitude" doesn't extend to human poachers who steal big game from all of us by killing it out of season and thus making it "un-available" to us legally licensed hunters during the game's season... especially if the poachers shoot the animals and just let them lay. THAT is simply UNACCEPTABLE!~!~!

Is that why hunters have a hard time killing them, they're too evasive?

How many cats are there? How many Elk per cat are killed?

How many wolves are there? How many Elk per wolf are killed?

What species of Wolf was here?

What species was re-introduced?

Interesting though that 3 European Countries (France, Germany, Switzerland) just re-introduced wolves as well. Why would they do that?

I was hoping that a stupid statement wouldn't make its way into this thread, but there it is.

FYI, maybe for the thousandth time. Montana had wolves already as far south as Missoula, before relocation took place. They immigrated down from Canada, just as they would without white man here. We had established packs of wolves, and they are still here. They didn't get vaporized by some mythical creature.

Common sense isn't common is it?

There's a sale on Tin Foil at Wal Mart this week.
