These two rounds seem very similar in ballistics. I know the 284 Win can be put in a short action while the 280 AI is long action. Is there a clear winner here if you wanted to load 168gr Bergers? I know there are brass issues with the 284, but it is available. Recoil seems like it would be similar. I'm thinking in terms of a NULA or the Kimber Moutain Ascent. http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/model-84m/mountain-ascentA NULA in 284 is very tempting just because it's a classic in my mind. Just wondering what others thought about these two rounds. Thanks!

It has been my impression, right or wrong, that the the SA to LA 7mm equivalents are more or less like this:
SA ----------- LA
7mm-08 ------- 7x57 284 ---------- 280 7mm SAUM ----- 280AI 7mm WSM ------ 7mm Rem Mag

Box length would be my only concern with 168s in the 284 on a SA.

Check out the new issue of Rifle magazine (last page). Pretty well sums up why the unimproved 280 is superior to the 284.
If you need 7mm Remmag performance (AI tries), then buy a 7mm Remmag. There are tons of minty used ones around a lot cheaper than a 284 or AI and ammo is available anywhere.
The Mountain ascent also has a brake that many guides hate.If the barrel is 22" with the brake you're gonna get 7mm08 performance, if not, it's still too short.
For what it costs, you could afford a very nice used 700 and self guided Elk hunt.(w/o match bullets)

The 280AI runs 6-8 grains additional powder for another 100+ fps, generally speaking. 55 vs 62 or so, that with 140 grainers. I have had very nice custom rifles in both.
Neither is magic, but are solid cartridges. My 284 was on a short action M70 (think 3.05" mag box) which helped.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Cannister.... dokhalliday.... and simivalley.
For crying out loud, just how many screen names are you going to create Larry Root?
Why do you find it necessary to continually circumvent Rick Bin's wishes for you to be gone from his website by adding numerous screen names??

It is hard to figure out why there are people on the sight who believe that interrupting a conversation among other members on a technical subject with references to imagined people and wishes of the sight's owner that he has never stated.
As others have posted on this sight, once the thread goes "off the subject", it's probably time to end the conversation.
I hope the initial poster found enough information to help his decesion.

I'd have to say multiple bannings by the site owner are a very clear indication of his wishes in this regard Larry.
Decision.

Hey, what's up LARRY?!!! Did you finally get out of your bunker?
Speaking of BUNKERS, LARRY, how's about you go ahead and tell us all about your time over in Vietnam bunking with Marine snipers and flying F105s?
You're quite the national "hero," LARRY, so let's hear about your exploits.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. I do tend to fit in well wherever I go in person. The campfire is the most outside exposure I get. No TV, no newspaper.
