Again, Remington 700 SPS in .243 Win.

I'm putting one of two scopes into brand new Redfield SR bases ( 2-pc. ); and Redfield JR Low Matte 1" rings.

Scope choices consist of:
Redfield Low-Pro Widefield 3-9 ( made in Denver, CO ).
TASCO HIGH COUNTRY 4-16x40 w/Stoney Point Turrets.

I don't see the TASCO getting beat to death.
I can see the Redfield coming up a bit short.
Seems backwards, but I'd like some input.
It's her 1st REAL rifle.

I posted that I already have TWO scopes to use.
Which of those to use is what I'm asking.

low end, Buris FFII 3-9x40

mid end, VX2 3-9x40...

Put a good scope on it and have a hunter shooter for life.

I agree with a new scope. The Burris suggestion will work on a .243 (eye relief), The VX-2 has more. You may need to fit the stock to her depending on her stature. I think the stocks need to fit.

Don't sweat the post count, It has nothing to do with what a person knows. It goes both ways. jack

Of the two you have and want to use, I'd go Redfield. Less to fuss with, the KISS principle is important when dealing with youngsters IMO.

I don't have that much money but I would be saving my pennies for a new scope like Rancho's suggestions. Better in the long run.

Of the two you have, definately the Redfield. that era of Redfields were pretty decent scopes and I just bought a 4-12 from that era to put on a similarly aged 243 myself. They are decent optically and pretty rugged as far as retaining zero etc. It will be fine for a while, down the road a 2-7x32 of good quality would serve quite well unless varmint shooting at longer distances is a plan for the future in which case a -12 or thereabouts would be a good choice. I have a Burris Signature Posi Lock 3-12 on my 6mmAI rifle, kind of an all around truck and motorcycle gun in my world.

If you already have it and it has proven to be reliable in the past then the redfield hands down imho.

I'd use the Redfield as well. If you look new then I'd look at the VX-1 rifle scope, it is pretty much the old VX-II and how many of us are still running that scope? I sure wouldn't put that Tasco on the rifle, no need to give her more scope than she needs to start out.

I wouldn't put either on any rifle I wanted to use in the field.
The Redfield widefield scopes had lots of problems back then. A complicated scope on a first rifle is a bad idea. Too many things to play with and go wrong.
If you insist on a variable, then either a Burris FFII or a Leupold. E

I bought two Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40 with the Plex reticle, they were giving them away at the time for $160. Now they run around $200. Good scope, never had any problems.

The new Redfields are affordable, made by Leupold, and decent.

I'd sell the Tasco and old Redfield to fund.

Or mount either one of what ya got. They are both more than adequate as long as they stay together. No promises there.

Yeah of those I'd definately do the Redfield.

Having said that, the idea of selling both to fund an ideal is right on. My son got a FFII 6x for his 1st rifle and is knockin shotshells at 100 & gallon milk jugs at 300 no prob.

I would put a fixed 4x scope on that rifle and then teach your daughter to shoot. Nothing to fiddle with, put the cross hairs were you want the bullet to go. Buy her a good knife.
