I read this elsewhere. Can't say as I know the answer. But it got my curiosity up.

Thoughts ??

"My Mod. 70 in .243 Win. is a long action. Anyone know why it wouldn't be a short action. It was Mfg. in 1979. I ordered an aftermarket stock and they sent me a short action, but it didn't fit of course. I called Winchester and the guy on the other end of the line couldn't give me a reason and told me it should have been a short action. Can anyone add any logic to this?"

Winchester didn't make a short action till the 80's or 90's if I'm not mistaken.

Winchester did not build a short action receiver until the early 80's. Short action cartridges were fit into the standard long action by using a magazine spacers to shorten the inside length and longer bolt stops to limit bolt travel.
Note: The Pre'64 Model 70 was also only made in one action length and was chambered from 22 Hornet to 375 H&H.
