I bought one the other night from a friend that was helping a widow customer of his.
This gun was built in 1955. It is a sporter model with a 22" barrel chambered in 30-06.
The wood has a few dents/dings but over all it is in good shape. The blue is 99% and has almost no marks.
The action is nice and shiny but it does have "wear" marks from being cycled.
Any idea on the value?

Why do you call it a "sporter model"? How much did you pay for it?
Most of the old M70's that I have seen with 22" barrels have Featherweight barrels!
Do you know what a Featherweight barrel or a Standard weight barrel's contours look like?
Check on sites like Gun Broker, Auction Arms etc. for what they are asking for similar rifles.
If it has not been modified such as a pad added, a side mount etc. it may be a collectors value.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

Alot of contradiction with your thread....1955 was the first year of the fwt 06 which had the 22" barrel. The standard wt had the 24" barrel in 1955. Give us the first 3 digits of the SER # and we can verify the year made. There's a big difference in price between a first year fwt 06 and a std wt made in the same year.....We need some more (correct info)...thanks..

I believe the FW debuted in 1952 along with the introduction of the .308....The .270 and .30/06 were also offered then....

I believe the FW debuted in 1952 along with the introduction of the .308....The .270 and .30/06 were also offered then.... The 308 was the initial offering in the featherweight which debuted in '52. The '06 didn't come along in the featherweight until '55, along with the 270 and the 2 new arrivals, the 243 and 358. That was also the first year for the Super Grade Featherweight. Steve

I stand corrected....didn't have my Rule book with me....  Always wondered why the .358 was only offered in the low comb stock? Thanks, Steve...

Sounds like a Featherweight. If it's completely original, it could be worth ~$1200.
