In the last yr or so I've had an interest in 99's, done enought research to know which one;s I would like to have, but still don't know much about them. I'd like to see if my assumptions are correct.

Anyway, picked this one up at a Gun Show, paid more than I wanted to.........maybe more than it's worth, but best one I've personally have ran across, most I have seen have been beat up and over priced. I paid $475, Its a 308 but it is in good shape, its been shot, but not much. Blueing is near new, stock has some dings, but I'm fine with it, I bought it to use anyway. It looks like it was Factory D&Ted for scope, I'll get a scope mounted and shoot it..........guess I better get some dies, wouldnt you know 308 would be one of the few common cal's I dont' load for.

It looked like a DL, has walnut stock, cut checking or what appears as cut checking, tang safety, counter........but says 99M, my guess its a DL and the M if for Monte Carlo. It also has Alum butt plate, I think it Alum.

Trigger is about 7 1/2 pounds........can the trigger on this model be worked on to get the trigger down, I'm bolt action guy and not familar with this type trigger and how much work can be done on them. I'm under the impression that some models have better triggers than other.

Also when I was cleaning it up, looked like the lever had clear varnish or etc on it, break cleaner made it turn white which I had to clean up no big deal..........do the levers have clear coat.

Not sure what yr it was made, plugged the Ser # 1013394 into the website to check yrs made and best I can remember it said it was made after 1961.

This one happed to be one of the ones I wanted so I bought it.

Comments please, thanks, Billy

Billy, you didn't do too bad. The gun looks like its in excellent shape. It is a DL and yes the M means Monte Carlo stock. Welcome to the forum, and whats your next 99 going to be?

My next 99 is which ever one has the tang safety and the Clip, I posted about it a good while back, It's a 99 I dug out of my gunsmith buddies scrap pile. I'm going to build a 284 out of it, I have a clip for it I bought from one of the guys here if I remember correctly, just can't get my buddy to clean it up and fit the new barrel that rusting in his shop.........lol. I have a nice two piece Claro blank that will make the stock from......although I have never done a two piece, only done bolt guns.

Down the road I want tang safety with clip in a couple of cals, but will try to build from reciever up.........cause I like to do stock work and I'm not a collector, I just like to work on guns and build my own stock in my spare time.......what little I have.

Someday I will get a takedown also.

But I have two bolt action projects I'm working on that I want to get finshied before I start on to much more.

Thanks, Billy

Congrats, you didn't do bad on your purchase. Not great, but definitely not bad for a gun show. First deer rifle of mine was a magazine 99 in 284, so good luck with yours!

Good news is that most folks here are after the older guns so you won't get much competition from them . There are some here who have experience with adjusting the trigger, and with dating your gun. Give them a bit and they'll point you in the right direction.

Your Savage looks good. Not a bad price and somebody hasn't butchered the stock with a recoil pad. I live in San Antonio, TX. and our monthly gun show has 99's in your price range. A few years ago, they were around $300 - 400. I've noticed that every year the price goes up.

Again, it's a good 99. Enjoy!!!

It should be 1961 but check the front of the lever above the pivot pin, the stamp should have an M inside it.

I think you did fine. The condition looks very good and it is cut checkered (way better than pressed checkering any day). The triggers on the top tang models are noticably better than the pre-mils IMO. It's in the venerable .308 Win. with a 24" barrel. That should stack up deer like nobodies business. You might be pleasantly surprised how accurate she shoots. Good for you.
