I have a Remington 700 BDL in 300 SAUM and want to convert it to 300 WSM. What all has to be done to this rifle to convert it? Is it best to use a magazine box from Remington, HS Precision or who to get it to feed correctly?

If it was me I'd leave it as is, but if you really want a WSM in a 700, just sell the one you have and buy a new 700. Remington is chambering the WSM's in a few rifles now.

I thought of that, but I have too much invested in this one with a Jewell trigger, Lilja barrel, Rimrock stock, etc. That's the ONLY reason I'm trying to keep this one. I'm just tired of not being able to find a variety of factory ammo if I need it in a pinch.

Since Rem now makes a 300wsm may want to call them and seel if you can get a magazine etc or check out Brownell's they sell a magaizine box for the rem short action to handle the wsm case for magazine box and follow runs around $65. I'm have a gunsmith put one on my rifle now.

I can't see why the magazine would be any different than the SAUM magazine....a simple rechamber should do it....
I have tried 270 WSM's in my Model Seven 300SAUM and they will feed fine,..of course they won't chamber fully...

You are but a simple rechamber away. The box, follower, and feeding geometry is the same with SAUM and WSM rounds.

Depending on the specific reamers used, the barrel may have to be set back slightly, though that would probably be a good idea anyway to completely clean up the throat if it's been shot much.

It would make a lot more sense to spend a few dollars to start reloading for the very good round that you already have. Further, if you have an accurate load for your rifle, you really don't need selection beyond what is offered by Remington, do you? It will kill anything that the gun is suited for already.

I am primarily concerned with what alteration, if any, has to be done to the bolt face. I had assumed that the magazine box and follower would have to be changed. Good to hear that may not be the case. I've tried the Remington factory ammo and it shoots terrible.

Why would anyone spend money on a Rimrock stock, Lilja barrel, and Jewell trigger and shoot factory ammo?

rstokes,
The bolt face will work perfectly as-is. There is literally nothing that you will need to have done to the action. The smith will just need to pull the barrel, and rechamber.

Probably the best thing to do would be to have the smith that built it do the alteration. If he can't, won't, or the backlog is long, shoot me a PM and I'll give you a couple names that can fix you up right and quick.

Thank you all for the great information. Normally, I would never shoot factory ammo. However, I went elk hunting in Colorado this year and thought I had packed enough of my handloads (168 gr TSX, H4350, Fed 215) and I had not. When I ran short, there was nothing to be had except Remington. I realize that I am probably overreacting by switching to WSM, but I promised myself that I would not be coaught in that position again.

just curious as to how you managed to shoot up all your ammo on an elk hunt....there must have been herds of 'em running thru camp..;-)

Not to hijack this thread but I have the same question but the rifle is a remy bdl in 7 saum instead of the 300 saum. I would like to rechamber it to 7 wsm. Can anyone confirm that this is just a simple rechamber job?

Also wondering if anyone has experiance with the legth of the remy 700 7 saum magazine prohibiting 140's from reaching the lands (specifically i'm looking to shoot 140 nosler bt's, ab's and perhaps barnes tsx's).

Thanks

Teeder,

Do you have A.D.D.???

Can't you just answer the question?

By the way, in case you missed it, Jeremiah was a bullfrog.
