I can only guess... Perhaps they preferred the safety that does NOT lock the bolt down??? Or perhaps they just thought it was butt-ugly! (Which it certainly is, IMHO... ) If you just HAVE to have one of the square, I'm sure I can come up with one.... I'd happily trade it for a round one... GH

It has to be on fire to open the bolt.

Nice clean rifle. Should shoot great and last many years.
I prefer a floorplate on Remmys.

Someone probably swapped out triggers at some point.. Yeah that's what I was thinking too. The safety is part of the trigger unit.

Swap the scope mounts, put on a good scope, shoot a box of Federal match through it and see how it does.

What am I missing? How about a better picture of the safety. On all of my Rems. the safety is round or cylindrical. As best as I can see, it looks like a Rem safety to me.
Aim for the exit hole.

I just picked up a 1967 remington 700 adl 308 win. that is super clean. The only thing not original is the safety. It has the round safety instead of the square safety. My question is why would someone replace it with the newer safety? Im trying to decide whether to leave it the way it is or find an original square safety?. These things aren't classic cars. You're concerning yourself over nothing.

try to find the proper trigger/safety group--some diligent looking should help you to find it--as mentioned, the safety will be square, and easier to articulate due to better height. (does it have the split sear?)
as per mounts; a good, clean system is the leupold dual dovetail.
as far as the redfield widefield scope (a 1970's gimmick), the ocular bells often won't clear the remington bolt handle, unless you get into higher rings...
all learning is like a funnel: however, contrary to popular thought, one begins with the the narrow end. the more you progress, the more it expands into greater discovery--and the less of an audience you will have...
